Radio buying spree

The hair on the back of my neck is standing at attention after reading about Cumulus media's $1 billion plan to buy radio stations.

It sounds to me like they have been circling and hovering, waiting for the price of the radio stations to hit rock bottom and the economy to rebound slightly, and now they are ready to pounce. According to Tom Taylor's column this morning at Radio-Info.com, they are going to concentrate on the big markets, which means they will be buying stations from the current media giants.

Yes, I'm happy the media giants will be getting smaller, but if they are simply replaced by another media giant, is that going to improve things in any way? Consider this quote from the investment company that is backing Cumulus. They admire Cumulus Media’s demonstrated ability to “grow radio businesses while achieving significant operational efficiencies."

Let me translate that for you if you don't understand what they're saying: There will be even more job cuts when Cumulus buys a radio station.

Good luck finding more jobs to cut. They're all gone already.
