Jimmy Kimmel wants Nov. 17 to be National Unfriend Day--a day to get rid of all the people on Facebook that are not your real friends...
I appreciate the spirit of this, but I'm respectfully not going to participate. I just looked at my Facebook friend list, which is now around 1200 people, and I have to admit I don't personally know most of them. On the other hand, when I use my Facebook page to post links to things I've written, there is a dramatic spike in the number of hits. To be totally honest, that's the reason I'm on Facebook in the first place.
The number of hits on my blogs are approaching a million this year, which isn't too bad for some schmo sitting in his basement. (I am the blogger stereotype--though I usually wear pants). So, even though my Facebook friends aren't technically my real friends, I appreciate them anyway.
The fact that Facebook also helps me keep up with my real friends is a nice bonus. I have managed to reconnect with dozens of friends from high school, college, and my radio career.
I know there are real concerns about Facebook (especially concerning privacy), but I still think for the most part, it's a positive experience. At least for me.
