From the Eckhartz Bookshelf: Father Knows Nothing

With over 80 books in our library, this year we're taking some time every week to highlight one of the books on the Eckhartz bookshelf. This week's book is Father Knows Nothing.

During his 20s and 30s, Rick Kaempfer worked in radio, producing legendary shows by Hall of Famers John Records Landecker and Steve Dahl & Garry Meier.

During his 40s, Kaempfer became a full-time writer. He wrote or co-wrote four books during that time (“The Living Wills”, “Records Truly Is My Middle Name”, “$everance”, and “The Radio Producer’s Handbook”), while also serving as the primary caregiver and stay-at-home dad for three growing boys (ages 10, 8, and 3). Care to guess which half of his job was a bigger challenge?

As a means of making sense of it all, Rick wrote a column about his parenting adventures at the end of every week. He posted those humorous stories on his daily blog (rickkaempfer.blogspot.com), and before he knew it, Rick had developed a following.

The Northwest Indiana Times came calling, and for the next eight years Rick wrote his weekly column under the title “Father Knows Nothing” for various different properties at nwi.com. With the help of this added exposure, and the explosion of social media, Rick’s following grew. He may not have gotten any better at the hard part of his job (hence the title of the column and the book), but he began to be recognized for his writing. The Chicago Headline Club twice nominated Kaempfer for a prestigious Peter Lisagor Award for best newspaper-affiliated blog in Chicago. (And though Roger Ebert at the Sun Times came home with the award, Rick did get to put on a suit and drink ten dollar cocktails with the journalistic glitterati for a couple of evenings.)

In 2013, just after he turned 50 years old, Rick reluctantly bid a fond farewell to Father Knows Nothing. He wanted to turn his decade of writing into a book. For the next eight months, Kaempfer waded through 400 old columns, wrote some new material, and wove these memorable stories into the narrative form you can purchase today.

To his readers his message is clear: “This is definitely NOT a how-to-book. More like a how-not-to-book.”

To his sons: “When it’s time for therapy, just hand this book to your shrink. It will save you a lot of time and money.”

It’s certainly not their fault that Father Knows Nothing.

  • Kaempfer’s triumphant achievement is also his greatest success. The most famous, hilarious, suburban stay-at-home dad of all-time!

Pat Colander, Associate Publisher & Editor/Shore Magazine
  • Father Knows Nothing is a loving, humorous, insightful and abundantly entertaining tale of a dad and his sons.

    John Records Landecker, WLS-Radio
  • His funny and insightful perspective on fatherhood made me realize again why I don’t want to have any kids.

    Jeff Hoover, WGN-TV Morning News
  • It doesn’t matter whether you’re the father of sons or daughters, the stories in Father Knows Nothing will hit close to home. I laughed out loud picturing Rick breaking up fights between his sons, flinging the top layer of a pizza across the kitchen and scaring his son out of lawn maintenance. The frequent laughs are balanced with emotionally touching stories and insights. This book is a wonderful record of an exciting, tumultuous time that all parents will relate to.

Reviews

  • “This book is a fantastic idea. I absolutely love this.”

    Larry Potash, WGN-TV
  • “When people hear the title everyCubever I don’t think it sinks in just what this means. It’s every. single. player. ever. What an undertaking. What a great book. What a great idea.”

    John Records Landecker, WGN Radio
  • “From the immortals to the footnotes, they’re all here. Every player has a story. An enduring fascination for any baseball fan with the curiosity to ask, hey, who were those guys?”

    Lin Brehmer, WXRT Radio
  • “Amazing. That’s the only word for EVERY CUB EVER. Amazing.

For bar bets, crazy stories, pull-out lists (every Cub born in Hawaii
or every Cub to serve in the military) and playing “Six Degrees of Fergie Jenkins”, it’s a die-hard’s must-have.

Its immersive Cubness bound to please both the casual fan and the red-eyed obsessive, not to mention the ghosts of all the Colts, Orphans and White Stockings who can be found whizzing around the warning track, rustling the ivy.”

James Finn Garner, NY Times Best Selling Author, Politically Correct Bedtime Stories
  • “Hey, Hey Holy Mackerel, Cubs fan/researcher extraordinaire Rick Kaempfer has compiled the ultimate resource for fans of Chicago’s North Side baseball team. There’s no doubt about it, Kaempfer’s EveryCubEver is a treasure trove of team trivia that will thrill and delight all fans of the boys in blue. Kaempfer writes with wit, charm, and an encyclopedic knowledge of his favorite baseball team that brings to life every single player that has ever suited up in a Cubs uniform over the last 150 years. EveryCubEver should be on its way to every Cubs fan’s bookshelf.”

The Eckhartz Bookshelf: Always a Pleasure

Our top selling book of last year's holiday season is still going strong. Chuck will be appearing at the Windy City Bulls game this weekend. Details in the flier below...

So, when you pull Always a Pleasure off the book shelf, what will you find inside it?

Always A Pleasure is a compilation of Chuck Swirsky’s life in and out of the landscape of sports broadcasting along with stories featuring personalities and life-changing experiences that have shaped who he is. Always A Pleasure will detail a journey from Virginia to Seattle, Ohio, Chicago, Detroit, and Toronto, that has enabled Chuck to benefit from the virtues of perseverance, passion, and positivity through the leadership and mentoring of others.

Here's what other people say about it...

  • Having known Chuck since my days as a still-developing youth player in Toronto, where my dad was a member of the Raptors, I can attest to the fact that his passion for people and basketball is deep and sincere. Chuck’s unique desire to mentor young people, especially minorities and those of different cultures and backgrounds, will help inspire those who share the same dreams, dreams that enabled him to persevere to the top of his profession. I’m proud of Chuck, and excited that others can become enlightened by his exciting broadcasting journey, which includes nearly 25 years in the NBA and, of course, a trio of Curry family members shooting from the stars, just like him.

--Steph Curry, Golden State Warriors, 2-time NBA MVP, 4-time NBA champion
  • Basketball is about more than the players on the court or the fans in the stands. It’s also about the voices who add color to the game—play-by-play, night after night. And Chuck Swirsky is one of the legends responsible for the soundtrack of basketball. With passion that is always palpable, Chuck brings excitement every time he picks up a mic. Over the years, millions of fans have hung onto his every word, but what’s even more special about him is who he is when the mic is off. In my years in Toronto with Chuck, I never received a greeting from him that didn’t include an ear-to-ear grin. I feel lucky to have seen him continue to grow as a broadcaster when he and his family moved to Chicago. Chuck showed me that a team is only as strong as the environment surrounding it — a community that extends beyond the clubhouse. So thank you, Chuck—for your enthusiasm on great days and positivity on the rough ones. You made Toronto a great place to be in a great place to play. Oh, and thanks to your kids for always keeping those cookies around. Those were no joke.

--Chris Bosh, Toronto Raptors, Miami Heat. 2021 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. 2 time NBA Champion.
  • Upbeat, energetic and optimistic, Chuck Swirsky has enjoyed a court-side seat to the NBA’s — not to mention Chicago sports’ — greatest decades. First as a sports reporter/personality and later as the well-respected play-by-play voice of the Toronto Raptors and Chicago Bulls, Chuck entertains and informs through his deep sports knowledge and unsurpassed preparation and work ethic. His distinctive voice and passion for people and the games they love has entertained millions.

--Jerry Reinsdorf, Chairman of the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox. 6 NBA Championships. 2005 World Series Champion. 2016 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
  • Night in and night out there was no one who brought more heart and passion to the game of basketball than Chuck Swirsky. For ten years Chuck was the very soul of building fans who loved his unique style and upbeat personality. Nothing tasted better than his call to “bring out the salami and cheese Mamma”.. his special winning call. Chuck will always be a hero in Toronto.

--Larry Tanenbaum, Chairman of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Chairman of the NBA Board of Governors
  • I have now worked with Chuck “The Swirsk” for 14 years. First and foremost, he is a good man, great partner and loyal friend. I have not met a person who is more knowledgeable of the game of basketball, past and present. His recall is nothing short of amazing! He always has an impressive fact or stat that is relevant to our broadcast. He brings his ‘A GAME’ every time.

--Bill Wennington, Chicago Bulls : 3 time NBA Champion. Basketball analyst on Chicago Bulls Radio Network.
