Happy Birthday Frank Chance

~Frank Chance 1876–1924 (Cubs 1898-1912)

His real name was Frank Chance, but even his teammates called him “The Peerless Leader.” (Sometimes they just shortened it to “PL”). He was the undisputed leader of the best Cubs team in history, the Cubs of the ’00s. With the Peerless Leader at the helm, they won four pennants and two World Series titles. He allowed the boys to have their fun (he usually bought drinks and played cards with them), but in exchange he expected them to shut down the festivities at midnight the night before games, and to play their hardest during the games. He led by example. Anyone who wondered how to perform merely needed to watch the way Chance fiercely defended his turf and teammates. He was known as a brawler, and he was so unafraid in the batter’s box he was beaned more times than any player of his era, and more times than any other Cubs player in history. (Complications from those beanings eventually ended his career, and probably shortened his life). Chance was a fierce competitor. James J. Corbett, heavyweight champ, called him “one of the best amateur fighters I`ve ever seen.” One time he provoked a riot by punching out Giants pitcher Joe McGinnity at the Polo Grounds. Another time he threw a bottle into the stands at fans in Brooklyn. Chance and his double play mates (Tinker and Evers) were inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1946. Unfortunately for Frank, he had already been dead for 22 years.

Lou Brock

Sad news. Lou Brock passed away yesterday. Here is his write-up in EveryCubEver... 


 

~Lou Brock 1939–2020 (Cubs 1961-1964) It’s not that the Cubs didn’t realize they had a good potential player on their hands. It’s just that they didn’t know how to develop him. Brock came up through the Cubs system during their ill-fated College of Coaches era. Every few weeks Lou was getting different directions. When they traded him in 1964 for a former 20-game winner, there wasn’t much of an uproar in Chicago, but the Cubs players knew their team was making a big mistake. Lou Brock was a six-time All-Star for the Cardinals, led the league in runs scored (twice), doubles, triples, and stolen bases (eight times). He hit over .300 eight times. He retired as the all-time career leader in stolen bases. And most importantly, he retired as a two-time World Series champion. In his first year of eligibility, Lou Brock was elected into baseball’s Hall of Fame. He has more career hits than any other player born in Arkansas. (Photo: Topps 1964 Baseball Card)

Changes at WGN Radio

 It's weird when you personally know everyone involved in a story like this. There is some good news and some not-so-good news. Start with the good news. John Landecker is coming back and will get the 7-10pm shift on a regular basis. That's excellent. JRL belongs on the radio. He's a HOFer, for cryin out loud. Steve Bertrand is also getting a new show and it's going to be a magazine-style news program in the afternoon. That could be really interesting.

Unfortunately, Roe Conn was let go. His last show was yesterday. Nick DiGilio was let go too. He had been at WGN for 35 years.

Fred Weintraub, the globe-trotting Chicago broadcaster who splits his time between London, Singapore and home, gets the profile treatment from Rick Kaempfer in the September issue of Illinois Entertainer. (Here is the link.) When Weintraub hosts his weekly radio show with Hannah Stanley Sundays on Evanston Broadcasting talk station WCGO 1590-AM, it’s 11 a.m. in Chicago but midnight in Singapore. “If you want to do it, you find a way,” said Weintraub, who also works as executive producer of sports at Weigel Broadcasting. “I feel fortunate to do what I do, so it works for me.”

The Steve Bartman of 1936

September 3, 1936. A police officer may have cost the Cubs a victory. Henry Hanson was an ordinary Chicago cop. He was working security at a Cubs-Dodgers game. In the first inning of the game, young Cubs first baseman Phil Cavarretta hit a ball down the right field line, right were Hanson was standing guard. Hanson didn’t see the play clearly, but figured that because he was standing in foul territory, it must have been a foul ball. He picked it up and tossed it over to Dodgers right fielder Randy Moore who was charging toward the play. The umpires saw this little exchange and called timeout. After a long deliberation, they sent Cavarretta back to first base. If Hanson hadn’t touched it, Cavarretta certainly would have had a double or a triple on the play. Because the Cubs didn’t score the rest of the game, and they lost it 1-0 in the tenth inning, the Chicago newspapers blamed the loss on poor Henry Hanson…the Steve Bartman of 1936.

Charlie Kirk, the grassroots conservative activist who grew up in Prospect Heights, is joining the lineup of WIND 560-AM, the Salem Media news/talk station. Starting October 5, one hour of his new syndicated talk show will air at 11 a.m. weekdays on WIND. (To accommodate the addition, Dennis Prager will lose an hour, airing from noon to 2 p.m.) Kirk, a 26-year-old author, podcaster and founder of Turning Point USA, signed with Salem Radio Network to host a national talk show Tuesday. “I grew up listening to conservative talk radio, so I’m excited to bring a new generation’s voice to the medium and I’m thrilled to work with SRN to do that,” Kirk said. “It’s time to work. The country is in trouble and we have to save it.”

My boys were in scouts with Kirk and helped him on his Eagle Scout project. Despite repeated phone calls, Kirk never returned our bar clamp or our cooler that we brought that day to help out.

If you manage to talk to him on his radio show, please ask him to return them. The cooler is red. I'm guessing both of them are in his parents garage.

If he gets snippy remind him that a scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.

Not the president of the whole country

 I watched Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows on one of the Sunday shows this weekend, and he was talking about what was happening in blue states as opposed to Trump's America. Um, I'm pretty sure that he is the pesident of all the states, not just the ones that voted for him. This president literally doesn't give a crap about more than half of the country. He's actively, intentionally fomenting a civil war, and will not say the first word to calm the situation. The Washingotn Post put it this way in their editorial this morning...

His acolytes at last week’s Republican convention argued that Joe Biden’s America would descend into anarchy. In fact, the unrest now engulfing cities is in Donald Trump’s America. For voters wondering what a second Trump term would hold in store, here it is: a country steeped in hatred.

He would have voters believe the anger arises from an enemy within. “Most of Donald Trump’s America is peaceful,” White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said Sunday, on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” The violence, he contended, is confined to cities led by Democrats, like Portland. Could any expression of a nation at war with itself be more explicit?

 The "Black Panther" star was only 43 years old. Sad news. He was a super talented performer who portrayed people like James Brown and Jackie Robinson in the movies. The movie "42" is a favorite in our house. My son Sean has probably watched it ten times. And to think he passed away on Jackie Robinson day in baseball....

RIP Cathy Smith

The woman who spent 15 months in prison for injecting John Belushi with the drugs that killed him, has passed away at the age of 73. She had been living in Canada. I didn't realize this until I read the article, but she was also the inspiration for Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown".

 Very pleased by this review yesterday of Roger Badesch's book "The Unplanned Life" by Windy City Reviews...


The Unplanned Life: The Journey of Roger Badesch. Roger Badesch. Eckhartz Press, June 25, 2020, Trade Paperback and E-book, 340 pages.

Reviewed by Gerry Souter.

Perhaps a more apt title would be "The Unplanned Book of Roger Badesch." Normally, this would signal the retelling of a tedious ego trip that offers neither lessons nor entertainment for the reader. The book is mostly a chronological recitation of Roger's life, and therein lies the hook. He's had a damned interesting roller coaster life, a life summed up in a quote early on in the journey: “Man makes plans, God Laughs.”

His huge fan base comprises everyone who has met him, listened to him on the radio, learned from him in the classroom, or drawn upon his wisdom by osmosis. What staggered me as a reader was his mirror image of my life. As I read, place names pelted me like a spring shower. It was spooky. His love affair with radio shows, the newspaper route, a gang of kids living in the shadow of tougher Polish and Irish kids from steel mill families who perfected their pounding skills on us—I was there before him. It gave me a vivid image of my neighborhood's future life as I read his anecdotes and life tales from 10 years later.

Roger's journey is divided into two major parts, with a little bit of both parts suffused into each other.

The first half is a patchwork of anecdotes about his ascending the ladder of low wattage student radio-music and interview shows to arrive at Chicago’s City Hall Press Room at WKQX-FM as a street reporter and sometimes news anchor, ultimately serving in the Mayor’s Press Office for five years under Jane Byrne and Harold Washington. After a private-sector stint in advertising and public relations, the now-husband and father could fulfill a secret yearning—to return to school as a teacher. Making use of school radio and TV facilities, first at Downers Grove North, then migrating to Chicago Vocational Career Academy, he took that student raw material and, during a “whirlwind summer vacation,” assembled a 17-minute film titled “The Last Stain,” that went on to win an Emmy Award. In 2013 Badesch was re-elected Communications Chair of the Two Year/Small Schools Division of the Broadcast Education Association. He had achieved his childhood dreams of being on the radio and so much more.

The second part of this book is titled “Chapter Nine—The ‘C’ Word,” a title that says it all. On August 2012, Roger began another fight, this time for his life, battling cancer. He wanted to keep teaching at Roberto Clemente Community Academy and covered the pain as well as he could. At home, he had his dog, Rufus, to comfort him. In the next to last chapter, his son, David, took over typing for Roger as the insidious disease attempted to eviscerate his father. Courage runs deep in the Badesch family. But you don’t accomplish what Roger did without grit, and the next goal he had set was to finish this book. And here it is, all 362 pages, told with that straight-from-the-shoulder news anchor’s voice.

Live long, Roger. You’ve set a high bar, unplanned or not.

He reports: "I was finally able to drop off 2 copies of the book to Elizabeth Bird, Collection Development Manager of the Evanston Public Library - one for the main library (the site of the photo) and one for the Central Street branch. Not only do I and the library have a long history together, having grown up in Evanston, but an event involving Mayor Byrne, our daughter and the library is noted in the book."

A little bit of Final Countdown meets Philadelphia Experiment, this one was absolutely flooring, cover-to-cover. Character development was awesome, though I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing them in further works, along with how they end up affecting the world after these events. Absolutely loved the battle portions–the detail reminded me of watching the likes of Midway play out; extraordinarily real and I absolutely loved the MacGuyver-like technical improvisation by the characters. Overall, a wonderful read and will definitely pick it up again one day.

I have to admit i did notice an homage to the Final Countdown and the Philadelphia experiment. The characters were well written and i have to admit i did enjoy the combination of forces. I do hope for a sequel even one more based on the technological side and not the fighting..

This Sci-fi novel has time travel and air and naval battles with realistic physics regarding the differences between flight capabilities in the 1940s versus today. It’s a fun mystery read as the crews of the various ships try to figure out what happened during the DARPA test. It takes turns that seem to be changing the past while respecting and referencing the original course of history. I’m really hoping for a sequel.

I first met Roger in the late 1990s. We were part of a group of educators that met each April in Las Vegas at the Broadcast Educators Associaton annual convention. Roger and I were part of the Two-Year/Small College interest division. It was nice to see him every year for the next ten years or so.

I can say I know Roger but I really didn’t get to know Roger until I read his book, “The Unplanned Life.” WOW. As I read I didn’t realize how much Roger and I had in common. We both found an interest in broadcasting early in our academic years. Neither of us planned to become teachers of our craft, but we did.

I wish the miles between Chicago and eastern Idaho were closer. I would love to spend more face to face time with Roger.

Do yourself a big favor and read Roger’s book. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry. Most of all, it will inspire you to become a better person whatever your life plans may be or whatever life throws at you.

I worked with Roger at WKQX shortly after it’s transformation into one of Chicago’s first full-service FMs. He was City Hall correspondent and after stellar work as a reporter there, he was tapped to work for two legendary mayors. His recounting of the twists and turns of his careers in journalism, education and promotion make for a fascinating personal history, while also illuminating interesting incidents in Chicago city history along the way.

How do you cover a speech full of lies?

 There's a lot of complaining coming from right wing media today because the media is not covering the RNC the same way they covered the DNC. This ABC article sums up the complaining pretty well.

I'd like to point something out regarding this subject. The two sides are treated differently because one side is insistent on lying, and in this case, the lying concerns a public health crisis. This must be corrected. Stop lying, and the coverage will be the same. The media is under no obligation to help you endanger the lives of Americans.

Oh, and by the way, Fox News did all of the things they now accuse the real media of doing, but they did it during the DNC speeches. And they did it during truthful speeches they just disagreed with. So put a cork in it and stop your whining, snowflakes.

Mail-In Ballot Dos & Dont's

The Washington Post has a good piece in today's paper explaining what can go wrong with your mail ballot. It's not enough to mail in your ballot and hope it gets there in time. There are several other things that can get your ballot rejected. Over 500,000 ballots were rejected in the primaries. Worth a read if you are planning on voting by mail.

Bayern!

Great Champions League final yesterday. I know it was only 1-0, but it was exciting and dramatic all the way until the final whistle. Loved it. Congrats to Bayern for returning to the top of the mountain, and to Robert Lewandowski who would have won the player of the year award (Ballon d'Or) if they had given it out this year. I hope they change their mind and give it out after all.

While we – like all Americans – had hoped that Donald Trump would govern wisely, he has disappointed millions of voters who put their faith in him and has demonstrated that he is dangerously unfit to serve another term.


In contrast, we believe Joe Biden has the character, experience, and temperament to lead this nation. We believe he will restore the dignity of the presidency, bring Americans together, reassert America’s role as a global leader, and inspire our nation to live up to its ideals.

White Sox to ESPN Radio?

 From Robert Feder's column today...

Look for Chicago White Sox baseball to move to a new radio home next season. No one will comment and nothing is official yet, but all signs are pointing to a deal with WMVP 1000-AM, the ESPN Radio sports/talk station managed by Good Karma Brands. Such a move would be in keeping with ESPN 1000’s plan to compete on the local front with Entercom sports/talk WSCR 670-AM, which airs Chicago Cubs baseball. The White Sox are nearing the end of their three-year deal with Nexstar Media Group news/talk WGN 720-AM, which has shown little interest in renewing. In 2018 the team lost its radio home on news/talk WLS AM 890, which dropped broadcast rights contracts with both the White Sox and the Chicago Bulls as part of Cumulus Media’s reorganization from bankruptcy.

“The Ellen DeGeneres Show” has overhauled its senior production team in the wake of accusations of racial insensitivity, sexual misconduct and other problems in the work environment at the long-running daytime talk show.

Three senior producers — executive producers Ed Glavin and Kevin Leman, and co-executive producer Jonathan Norman — have been ousted from the Warner Bros.-distributed syndicated strip following damning allegations raised in recent reports by Buzzfeed and Variety. “Ellen” veterans Mary Connelly, Andy Lassner and Derek Westervelt will remain at the show as executive producers alongside host DeGeneres. Connelly, Lassner and Westervelt have been with the show since its inception in 2003.

Nudist Chases Wild Boar

Two of my favorite things...Germans and pigs. From Fox 5 TV...

BERLIN - A German nudist had the last laugh after giving chase to a wild boar that had run off with a bag containing his laptop.

Pictures posted on social media show the naked man running after a sow and her two piglets to the mirth of fellow bathers at Berlin's Teufelssee, or Devil's Lake.

German daily Bild reported Friday that the man, who wasn't identified, succeeded in recovering his pilfered laptop.

Wild boars are common in the forests around Berlin and can occasionally be seen venturing through city parks in search of food.
