Fox News Vs. Trump
Think about it. What would Fox do if someone demanded that they apologize and accused them of bullying? We know exactly what they'd do because they've been doing it for twenty years. They'd go on the air and imply whoever is accusing them of bullying is a puss. "Oh, wah. Are your fragile wittle feelings hurt?" That's exactly what Donald Trump is going to do to them. There's an endless game of "I know you are but what am I" brewing, with no end in sight until one side realizes that "Nuh uh" is not a sufficient retort.

RIP Chico Maki
He was one of the Blackhawks of my youth. Ron "Chico" Maki passed away yesterday at the age of 76.
On teams that featured the likes of Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and Tony Esposito, good ol' #16 was not one of the stars of those great Blackhawks teams (although he did manage to make three all-star teams), but he was an important cog. He played throughout the 60s and retired in 1975.

I'm posting this piece for a few reasons. One, go Chicago writers. Two, I love the tweet that alerted me to this Chicago Magazine article...
2. How much is Amazon paying these days under the new "pay only for pages read" metric?
I've been reading quite a bit lately about this trying to get a handle on it. On it's face, it sounds like such a an incredibly horrible deal. But there are a few pieces out there praising it, including the one I linked. According to this, Amazon pays about 1/2 cent per page view.
3. Should writers respond to negative comments on their articles?
This is a question our authors ask us all the time because most authors also write something else (articles, blogs, etc) and they inevitably get negative comments. Why? The internet is a cruel cesspool of bile. (That's my opinion as a 10-year blog writer). I personally no longer allow comments on my personal blog because I found it's better to simply stay above the fray. Life's too short to argue with trolls. You can never win those arguments anyway and it makes you look thin-skinned and impotent. Other writers disagree with me. Lots of different opinions at the link.
4. Apple's mistake was hooking up with the book-publishing cartel
My condolences to you if you own Apple stock. It's been a rough few weeks. According to this piece in Fortune Magazine, their big mistake was to make a deal with the major book publishers. Read the piece and judge for yourself if you agree or not.
5. Another look at Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken"
The New York Times Book section took a new look at one of the classic American poems, Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken". I'm guessing my fellow writers will find this story as interesting as I did. There's apparently a new middle ground theory about the poem's meaning.
6. Mastering the Radio Interview: 10 Tips for Authors from a Talk Radio Host
As a twenty-year radio veteran and a frequent radio guest for the past ten years, I can tell you that the linked article is the best advice I've ever read for authors who are planning on appearing on a radio show. It gives you tips for how to get booked, what to expect when you're on the air, and what to say or do when you get your chance. All of it is true. Great stuff.

How Not To Run A Sales Department
"Defendants were at risk of not obtaining this lucrative, advertising business account. It was during this time of high stress and pressure to obtain this account that plaintiff was requested to perform sexual acts or favors for potential male clients to obtain advertising business for defendants," she says.Not only did they allegedly tell her to do this, they allegedly fired her when she didn't get the account.
There was nothing subtle about it, Easby-Smith says. She claims that Wilkinson "specifically requested and pressured plaintiff to bypass the adverting agency, contact the large, potential client directly, call immediately, and do whatever was necessary to obtain their business for defendants, including performing inappropriate sexual acts or favors. Defendant Wilkinson verbally requested and demonstrated the type of sexual acts that he said plaintiff should engage in to obtain the large, advertising client for the monetary advancement of defendants' business."
Easby-Smith says she became "physically sickened, shocked and stunned by the request," which she refused.

The three-hour program immediately following Bears games on Sundays will debut on September 13, after the Bears opener against Green Bay.

Longtime Portland, OR radio personality Marconi is headed to Market No. 3, hired by Cumulus to man the previously unmanned 7-midnight show at Alternative WKQX/Chicago. Marconi most recently co-hosted mornings on Alpha Media Triple A KINK/Portland, OR until October of last year. Prior to that, he was a personality on Westwood One's 24/7 Rock 2.0, but he's best known for his many fine years of service at KNRK and KUFO/Portland.

There's been a lot of coverage of NFL teams fighting during the 2015 pre-season. Two Philadelphia sports talkers nearly became part of that highlight reel. During Eagles training camp, Wednesday, Mike Missanelli from Greater Media's 97.5 The Fanatic and Josh Innes from CBS's 94WIP nearly came to blows and had to be separated by Eagle's security.
According to Philly.com, Innes said he took off his sunglasses, "looked (Missanelli) straight in the face and said, ‘your show [expletive] sucks.'" Missanelli then moved toward Innes, and Innes backed away, before security stepped in. Missanelli then said, "Yeah, he stepped back and wet himself just like he did months ago. Anybody can be a tough guy behind a microphone."

Jared's Plea Deal
This is the plea deal he agreed to: Jared Fogle Will Pay $1.4 Million to 14 Underage Victims, Serve Prison Time and Register as Sex Offender.
How much prison time?
While Fogle's prison sentence is not yet determined, prosecutors say they will not request more than 12.5 years in prison and that Fogle has agreed not to request less than five years...It was unclear this morning how many of those victims were involved in child pornography and how many Fogle is accused of having sex with.If he considers 5 to 12 1/2 years in prison a good deal, you can only imagine the goods they have on him.

I was at a party this past weekend and the subject of Colbert's upcoming show was a big topic of discussion. Can he reinvent himself? How will he do it? We're all rooting for him, but we're worried how he'll translate to the general public. As for that part of the equation, the following is his analysis of what his late night show will be...

Trump Might Want to Read the Constitution
Trump's interview with Bill O'Reilly on Fox News last night was one of the most revealing interviews I've seen of him. O'Reilly questions Trump about his great new immigration plan, and Trump proves that he has no idea what the constitution says or means. Watch Trump's bluster start to fade when O'Reilly calls him on it. You can almost see him realizing in the middle of his answer that he actually might be wrong. He still blusters his way out of it, but it's half-hearted, and O'Reilly doesn't really let him get away with it. When you're a Republican and you're losing O'Reilly, it's only natural to start worrying...

1. Ebooks Are Changing the Way We Read
The Guardian has a great article about how eBooks are not only changing the way we read, but also how authors write.
2. 6 Tips for getting your self-published book reviewed
We happen to be in the "you really don't have to get it reviewed" camp, but if it's important to you, it's not impossible at all for self-published writers to get reviewed. There are a few good tips in this article.
3. Chicago Book Review
For authors in Chicago, there is always Chicago Book Review. We've had several of our books reviewed by this site. Of course, there's no guarantee it will be a positive review, but we've found them to be quite fair. They are obviously Chicago-centric. Here's their mission statement: "Our mission at Chicago Book Review is to highlight local and regional authors and publishers as well as books that tackle Chicago and the Midwest as subject matter, regardless of genre." They are also publishing a Fall 2015 preview which includes information (not reviews) about new releases coming from local houses and/or local authors and/or books that tackle local subject matter. 4. Indie City Book Fair August 30
It's been our experience that you won't sell a lot of books at book fairs, but this one sounds a little different. The Indie City Book Fair will be on Sunday Aug. 30 from noon to 5 at 1448 E. 57th Street in Chicago. Authors are invited to come, take over half a table, invite all their friends, family and fans and give a reading. It could be a cheap way to throw a book launch party. They are only asking for a $35 fee (not a percentage of the book sales), and are scheduling 30 minute windows.
5. Working at Amazon is like living in "Lord of the Flies"
To know Amazon well is to fear the eventual demise of our civilization. Yes, you need to sell on amazon (especially e-books), but Amazon's business practices are apalling. They really take advantage of authors and publishers, but their "eat it--where else are you gonna go" attitude is not confined only towards to their vendors. According to this piece in the New York Times, Amazon is also a horrible place to work. It takes the concept of survival of the fittest to ridiculous extremes. Enjoy your time working there--just watch your back because your co-workers are encouraged to squeal on you, and don't get sick.

Longtime local radio fans will remember Dave Benson's many years in Chicago at WMET-FM, WLUP-FM, and WXRT-FM (twice), where he worked as producer, Music Director, and DJ.

Sesame Street Moves to HBO
As part of the deal, starting this fall, new episodes of Sesame Street will air nine months ahead of when they air on PBS. Sesame Workshop will also produce a new show based on the Muppets.

Joe Maddon has noticed a pattern among championship-winning coaches in Chicago, they all had facial hair.
In an effort to get his new team out of its century-long title slump, the formerly clean-shaven skipper has been doing his best to grow a beard this season.
I know he's thinking of Ditka, Quennville, Ozzie and Phil Jackson, but I hate to point out to him that the last Cubs manager who won the World Series looked like this...

Turns out, it's the other way around. From the Daily News: Hungry Women Less Interested in Love
A full belly makes women more interested in romance, according to a new study from Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania.
The researchers asked 20 women to fast before looking at romance-themed pictures, such as a couple holding hands. They then drank a 500-calorie shake and viewed the images again.
When the women weren't hungry, "they were more responsive to romantic cues" and less irritated by them.
Any married guy already knows this, but that's a free one for the single fellas out there.

This is the first summer in a long time that I haven't been able to crank out a writing project. Check out my writing history. When the Cubs are terrible...I can be prolific. When they are good...I end up spending way too much time watching them, reading about them, and writing about them.
Cubs writing doesn't count.
