Publishing Portal--October 5, 2026

The latest news from Eckhartz Press, and a chance to peek into some of the great previous offerings from our humble little publishing company.

COMING SOON: The CEO's Symphony

=Henry Fogel spent over half a century in the administration of orchestras and their musicians. He has held leadership positions with the New York Philharmonic, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the League of American Orchestras. In that role, he met and worked with every giant in the classical music world. If you have any interest at all in the subject, you will find this memoir a delight. George Solti, Leonard Bernstein, Daniel Barenboim, and even this gentleman (photo below with Henry), Yo-Yo Ma (celebrating a birthday on October 7), make appearances in the book. It will be available for pre-order in a few weeks.

COMING EVEN SOONER: Cul-de-sacs

=Joni Hirsch Blackman said goodbye to her old colleagues at West Suburban Living last week, and the editors of the magazine were very kind to give her this wonderful send-off...

=Her Eckhartz Press book Cul-de-sacs is available for pre-order NOW! Reserve your copy here. The book ships in just a week or two.

White Sox discount

=Look, we suppose that the players on the field had something to do with the White Sox winning their playoff series against the Astros. However, they might also have received help from a higher power. Eckhartz Press was there on Pope Hat night doing our part... (L-R: WFLD's Dane Placko, EP Publisher Dave Stern, EP publisher Rick Kaempfer, Grammy-winning jazz singer Kurt Elling, and former Looper Mike Medina.)

=We have a pretty excellent roster of White Sox books, and this week they are going on sale with the use of a coupon code...

This week's appearances...

=Nick Digilio has two big appearances this week. First one is coming this Wednesday, October 7. He will introduce The Exorcist before it shows at The Pickwick Theater in Park Ridge  (5 S. Prospect, Park Ridge). Before and after he'll be selling his new horror book...

=Then this Saturday, October 10th, he'll be at the Museum of Broadcast Communications, 440 W. Randolph, being interviewed on stage by Rich (Svengoolie) Koz (Rich will not in Svengoolie makeup). Listening to these two guys talking about horror movies is going to be amazing. Plus, of course, the book will be available at the event. You can also check out the Svengoolie exhibit at the museum.

=By the way, the current issue of Illinois Entertainer is out and includes an interview with Nick. You can read that here.

=After Nick's appearance at the museum, head south to the Archer Heights library (5055 S. Archer in Chicago) to see Gloria Golec.  She will be appearing at the Archer Heights Library on the same day, October 10, at 2pm. This is a huge deal for her, because that was the neighborhood she grew up in, and it's the neighborhood lovingly captured in Gloria's book. It's part of Chicago Public Library's Polish American Heritage Month celebration.

=Here's a little more info about Gloria Golec and her book. We conducted the following Q&A which will give you a better idea of what to expect.

Eckhartz Press in the news...

Maria the Pappas

=Thanks to The National Herald for writing this nice piece about Maria Pappas and her memoir.

=Maria was at the unveiling of the Stephen Colbert exhibit at the Museum of Broadcast Communications. Here she is chatting with Axios writer Justin Kaufmann.

=Don't forget, the Maria publicity tour is in full swing. The next major book signing is coming up soon. A week from Sunday, there's a particularly classy one...Sun, Oct 18, Green Mill Jazz Lounge, 4802 N Broadway, Chicago, IL 60640 – 3 – 5:30 PM. We will be there too.

=It's appropriate the signing is in a music joint. Maria clearly has a favorite song. If you know that she's originally from West Virginia, you can probably guess what it is. We've got two recent examples of her singing it. The first one is at Lincoln Square Oktoberfest.

=Then  here she is again at her 60th high school reunion.

The Sun at the End of the Road

=Rick Kogan wrote a wonderful piece in the Chicago Tribune in honor of his old friend Tony Fitzpatrick last week. He interviewed Tony's son Max about his father.

=This week last year Tony Fitzpatrick was just beginning his publicity tour for The Sun at the End the Road. The same Rick Kogan wrote about the book in the Chicago Tribune. Unfortunately, as you can tell by reading the story, additional news was revealed. This was the day Tony revealed to the world that he was experiencing some serious health issues.

=Tony managed to attend his book launch via Zoom, and was greeted with this wonderful video from his friends and supporters...

=The last week of his life he was still making people happy with the book, including his health care workers...

=Tony passed away on October 11, 2025. We miss him tremendously.

=A tribute to Tony's life is coming up soon. We wrote about it in last week's Publishing Portal. Write down the dates (November 18, November 19). Tony's dear friends Rick Kogan and Jon Langford (and a host of others) will be paying tribute to this unforgettable man. Tickets are available here (18th) and here (19th).

Always a Pleasure

=Eckhartz Press author Chuck Swirsky is back at his day job this week. Looking forward to another great season of Chuck broadcasting Bulls basketball.

I Bear Witness

=It's also, of course, Bears season in Chicago. The author of the definitive Bears book, Dan McNeil, has been spending most of the past year in Arizona tending to his brother, who sadly passed away. It was good to hear Dan back in town, and back dishing the Bears dirt. In this case, on a podcast with Mark Grote.

=One of the evergreen parts of Dan McNeil's excellent book about the Chicago Bears is his chapter eulogizing the Bears greats who have passed away in recent years. This week in 2023 (October 5), we lost Dick Butkus. Dan wrote a wonderful tribute to the immortal Bears linebacker.

Records Truly Is My Middle Name

=Happy birthday to John Landecker's son-in-law, Bradley Whitford (October 10). He makes an appearance in the Hall of Fame edition of John's book. This is a photo of the Landecker family the night in 2017 that John (center) was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame. That's Bradley standing right next to John.

=Whitford made a Hall of Fame himself this week. He got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Brandwidth

=Yet another Eckhartz Press author had some job news this week. Kipper McGee, the broadcasting guru behind the book Brandwidth, has created a new company, America's Morning News. Here's the announcement he made...

Richard Reeder

=Last week we told you about Eckhartz Press author Richard Reeder (Sarasota & 1001 Train Rides in Chicago) being signed to host a new Chicago-based podcast at Cliff Dwellers. The first episode has been posted on Spotify.

Truffle Hunt

=Speaking of podcasts, Eckhartz Press author Brent Petersen (Truffle Hunt) hosts a popular one called Destination Eat Drink. This week's episode is all about Chicago...

Surviving Sue

=What a lovely review author and poet Nigel Byng posted last week about Vicki Atkinson's memoir Surviving Sue. You can read the entire review here, but this is a little taste of it...

One of the things I admired most about this book is Dr. Vicki’s prose. It is direct, vulnerable, and written with an educator’s clarity. There was a natural transition between her raw memories and her therapeutic insight. At times, it felt like I was listening to a very gifted public speaker rather than simply reading a memoir. She has a keen eye for the subtleties of female intuition and meticulously dissected the patterns of generational dysfunction. More importantly, she came across as being undaunted by the prospect of telling the truth about her past. That honesty is part of what made this book so refreshing to me.

Eckhartz Press birthdays....

=Two Eckhartz Press authors are celebrating birthdays this week. Happy birthday to Chili Dog MVP co-author John Owens (October 7) and  To Nudge the World author Jim Slusher (October 10). Both of them work in the media. Owens was the senior producer at the Chicago Tribune, WCIU, and ABC-7 for years, and Slusher is the Managing Editor at the Daily Herald.

Other notable birthdays...

Cubsessions

=One of the interviewees for Becky Sarwate and Randy Richardson's book about celebrity Cub fans is celebrating a birthday this week. Happy birthday to journalist and author Jonathan Alter (October 6). He rates his own chapter in the book Cubsessions.

 Behind the Glass

=Two football legends are celebrating birthdays this week, and both of them are featured in Randy Merkin's Behind the Glass book: Tony Dungy (October 6) and former Bears great (and Hall of Famer) Mike Singletary (October 9).  Each get a chapter in Behind the Glass. That's Tony with Randy below.

=Two of the rock stars featured in We Have Company are celebrating birthdays this week. Happy birthday to Jackson Browne (October 9) and David Lee Roth (October 10). Both of these photos appear in Bobby Skafish's book.

Take Me Back to Chicago

=Doug E. Jones wrote a great novel that takes place in 1970s Chicago. One of the characters involved in the plot is former Cub, the late great Joe Pepitone. If he was still with us, he'd be celebrating his 86th birthday this week (October 9).

=We found this gem on YouTube of Pepitone being interviewed in 1972.

Notable anniversaries...

Doin' the Cruise

=Last year's October issue of Illinois Entertainer included a profile of our freshly inducted Illinois Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Mitch Michaels. You can read that here.

The Loop Files

=This week in 2023, the publicity machine was just getting rolling for The Loop Files. It wasn't even officially released yet. Rick was on the Matt Kissane podcast talking about the book on October 9th, and the RAMP Newsletter featured the book in their popular radio publication on October 11.

=Rick was at the Museum of Broadcast Communications last week for the Stephen Colbert unveiling. While he was there, naturally, he stopped by to see his handiwork in the Loop exhibit...

=October 11, 2022, two Eckhartz Press books were named finalists for the Chicago Writers Association Book of the Year--and in the same category (non-fiction): Ike & Me by Rich King, and Chili Dog MVP by Dr. David Fletcher and John Owens. Chili Dog MVP brought home some hardware that year.

Grace and Friends Fire Activity Book

=This week in 2020 (October 7), co-author of Grace and Friends Fire Activity Safety Book Paul Possenti was called a COVID hero. Read this to find out more.

=October 9, 2020, Roger Badesch was interviewed by WGN Radio's John Landecker. You can listen to that here. This week in 2021 (October 5), Roger announced his retirement from WGN.

=This week in 2019 (October 11), two of our books were named finalists for the Chicago Writers Association Book of the Year.  The Scar Dance by William Mansfield (in the fiction category), and EveryCubEver by Rick Kaempfer (in the non-fiction category).

Doin' the Cruise and Safe Inside

=October 5, 2018, two more of our books were named finalists by the Chicago Writers Association for Book of the Year. Doin the Cruise by Mitch Michaels and Ken Churilla in the non-fiction category, and Safe Inside by Lee Kingsmill in the fiction category. Safe Inside brought home some hardware that year.

An Off-White Christmas

=This week in 2018 (October 9), Christine Sneed interviewed author Donald G. Evans about his excellent collection of short stories.

=October 5, 2017, TV producer Tom Weinberg got the first copy of his book Chasing the Lost City.  Chasing the Lost City became a television show on WTTW.

=This week in 2017 (October 9), Eckhartz Press signed one of the most famous sportscasters in Chicago to a book deal, Chet Coppock. Just a year later (October 12), Chet was on the airwaves at WGN touting his book. That interview is here.

We Have Company

=October 7, 2016, Bobby Skafish visited the WLS studios to talk about his book with his old colleague at the Loop, Steve Dahl. It just happened to be the same day that Trump's Access Hollywood tape came out. (Also in the photo--Brendan Greeley left and Dag Juhlin right)

Hugh Hefner's First Funeral

=This week in 2015 (October 6), the reviews came in for Pat Colander's award-winning book Hugh Hefner's First Funeral. Here are a few of them...

  • As Paul Simon bookended…”Time it was, and what a time it was….A time of innocence. A time of confidences.” Chicago in the ’70’s was surreal, scary and freaking hilarious. My Second City kith and kin may have found brighter lights in N.Y. and L.A. — but we were spawned and fermented at North and Wells. Good thing Pat Colander thought to take notes and chronicle everything.

Tim Kazurinsky, Actor, screenwriter, television and movie star, Saturday Night Live, Police Academy, Neighbors
  • Pat Colander toiled with me in the belly of the Chicago journalism beast in the 1970s and 1980s. When major stories were reported, she asked questions. When the questions were poorly answered or evaded, she asked even more questions of even more people. Then in a clear, true voice, she wrote it all down. She found the real stories behind the stories and this collection of her work is just great. She ought to be long-listed for the Man Booker prize, If I can figure out how to do it I will.

Denise DeClue, Writer of films including About Last Night, teleplays, documentaries, journalism, humor columns and a great deal of other funny stuff

EveryCubEver

=It's playoff time, Cub fans. It obviously didn't go exactly as we planned. Kind of like 2008.

=This week in 2008 (October 5), EveryCubEver author Rick Kaempfer was interviewed by CBS-2 TV just as the Cubs were ending their playoff run. It would be another ten years before EveryCubEver was completed. The seventh edition is out now. Perfect gift for your Cub fan friends. If you have a previous version, it's time to upgrade. This one also has hundreds of vintage photographs.

The Best of Words on Birds

=October 7, 2009 was a momentous day in Chicago birding history. It was week of the infamous spotting of Kirtland’s Warbler, a songbird rarely seen in these parts. Jeff Reiter wrote about the hub-bub in his book The Best of Words on Birds.

The CEO's Symphony and Sirens in the Loop

=Two huge centennial galas graced Chicago on the very same day, October 6, 1990.

=It was the night of the CSO centennial celebration. A description of that night, and photos like the one below will be in the upcoming Eckhartz Press book The CEO's Symphony.

=Meanwhile, just a few blocks away, the City News Bureau of Chicago was celebrating their 100th anniversary. It's a night fondly remembered and described in Sirens in the Loop. This photo is also in the book.

Celtic Knot and  Face Your Monster

=And finally, this week is the 155th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire (October 8, 1871).

=Robert Conlon's Celtic Knot actually begins around the time of the fire. He takes the readers back to a time when martial law was declared on the streets of Chicago in the aftermath of the fire. The book also contains this picture of the Chicago Water Tower, one of the few structures still standing after the fire.

=Russ Fahrner has a link to the fire as well. The author of Face Your Monster is a proud graduate of St. Ignatius High School. The main campus building is another of the few structures in Chicago that survived the fire and is still standing today.

Publishing Portal--March 2, 2026

The latest news from Eckhartz Press, and a chance to peek into some of the great previous offerings from our humble little publishing company.

National Women's Month

=March is National Women's month, and we wouldn't be where we are today without the contributions of our female authors. We've published more than 20 books written by talented women, including three Pats (Pat Colander, Pat Camalliere, Pat Motto) and two Vickis (Vicki Atkinson, Vicki Quade), plus Jeanne Bellezzo, M.L Collins, Gloria Golec, Jessica Hagy, Beth Jacobellis, Judy Ann Jamerson, Margaret Larkin, Lauren LoGiudice, Deena Mendes, Kristin Oakley, Lori Oster,  Becky Sarwate, Maggie Smith, Kim Strickland, Felitzitas Sudendorf, Janet Sutherland, Deb Tokarz, and Ann R. Wilson. We can't thank them enough.

=In addition, many of our editors have also been women. Two of them are still currently working with us, Lauren Schultz and Mary Leonard.

=And we can't forget our designers as well. The first few Eckhartz Press books (The Living Wills, Down at the Golden Coin, Records Truly is My Middle Name, Cheeseland, and Lost in the Ivy) had covers designed by Kelly Hyde.

Records Truly Is My Middle Name

=John Landecker's daughter Amy Landecker has directed and written her first film and she will be here this Thursday, March 5, along with her husband Bradley Whitford, to screen it at the Music Box theater. John Landecker will be there to moderate the discussion. We'll be there too...in the audience.

=Amy Landecker and Bradley Whitford were on The View last week talking about the film...

=Bradley Whitford was also on Stephen Colbert's Show last week talking about the film...

=A story Bradley tells on Colbert is also featured in Landecker's book Records Truly Is My Middle Name. This is a photo of the man he was talking about...Joseph Nye Welch, Amy's great-grandfather, and the man who famously derided Senator McCarthy with "At long last sir, have you no decency?"

Beyond the Glass

=We have a cover for Randy Merkin's second book! It will be available for pre-order soon. Here it is...

=Randy Merkin's first behind-the-scenes look at sports talk radio (Behind the Glass) is full of great stories and pictures about the movers and shakers of the Chicago sports world, including this week's birthday boy (below), Chicago Cubs Cy Young Award winning pitcher Jake Arietta (March 6). Beyond the Glass, Randy's second book, will have many more.

Surviving Sue and Slivers

=Vicki Atkinson has written a memoir for us (Surviving Sue) and now has a novel that will be coming out soon on Eckhartz Press. In the meantime, her blog gives a few clues about you might expect in the pages of her upcoming novel. It will be entitled Slivers.

Celtic Knot

=Robert Conlon was at the Boozy Book Fair on the Northwest Side of Chicago this past weekend. Thanks to everyone who came out.

=Here's the next one to put on your calendar. March 15th at 3pm, Robert Conlon (Celtic Knot) will be appearing at the G-man tavern on Clark Street (near Wrigley Field) to talk about his book. It will be a conversation with fellow Eckhartz Press author (and Celtic Knot endorser) Brendan Sullivan (The Living Wills). Doors open at 2pm. It's a free event, but they'd like you to RSVP here.

=Eckhartz Press author Nick Digilio featured one of his favorite guests on a podcast this past weekend.

=Suzanne Vega also provided this endorsement for Nick's book...

“40 Years, 40 Films is an artfully conceived combination of autobiography and film criticism by Nick Digilio. It makes for delicious and nostalgic reading, as we get to savor and remember the films, and to imagine them if we have not. All this is punctuated with anecdotes from his life. It’s a wonderfully original book and happy reading for all film buffs, whether or not you agree with Nick’s assessments.”

=Speaking of Nick Digilio, we hope you have this event marked on your calendar as well. Nick is going to be interviewed on-stage at the Museum of Broadcast Communications by Rick Kogan on March 15. More details below.

=On March 1, 2024—Dune Part 2 was released. In Nick's book, he named it the Film of the Year.

=Nick Digilio's night at the Lake Theater is next Wednesday night March 11 in Oak Park. The film he has chosen to show this month will be Zero Dark Thirty.

=Did you catch Jim Elsener's guest shot on Minutia Men Celebrity Interview last week?

=Jim Elsener has scheduled his book launch party! Mark it on your calendar. It will be on Thursday March 19th, from 6-8pm at Kappy's American Restuarant at 7200 W. Dempster in Morton Grove. Fellow Eckhartz Press author Mark Wukas (The Kiss of Night) will be there too. Look for these two to make dual appearances in the future. Both of their books are about the same thing, the City News Bureau of Chicago. One is non-fiction (Sirens) and and one is fiction (Kiss). Both are fantastic!

=Here's another upcoming Elsener appearance. He will be in Oak Park at the Book Loft on April 8th. More details in the coming weeks.

Oscars Biggest Mistakes & Worth a Second Look

=Eric Litt was at the Boozy Book Fair (Printers Row Brewing, 4801 N. Austin) this past Saturday. Thanks to everyone who came out.

=Next week he'll make his sixth appearance on Minutia Men Celebrity Interview, picking this year's Oscar winners.

Chili Dog MVP

=The Chili Dog MVP calendar is jam packed. This week they find themselves in Pennsylvania promoting the film about the book, My Father Dick Allen. They have two events there. One in Philly (March 5), and one in Dick Allen's hometown of Wampum (March 7).

=Of course, there's a reason this week was chosen. Dick Allen, the star of the book Chili Dog MVP, was born March 8,1942. Chili Dog MVP was released on his birthday in 2022. Last summer Dick was inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame.

=Eckhartz Press publishers Rick Kaempfer and Dave Stern will be traveling down to Mesa, Arizona for a screening there on March 12. Wanna come? I understand there might some spring training games nearby.

Mob Adjacent

=Some behind the scenes moments during the filming of the Mob Adjacent movie in New York...

The Sun at the End of the Road

=On March 3, 2000, the movie Ghost Dog was released. What does that have to do with the Tony Fitzpatrick book The Sun at the End of the Road? It inspired the name of the dog on the book's cover. Tony liked this piece so much he also made it into a poster. He gave us a stack of them to sell the week before he died. Book is here.  Poster is here.

=This week also marks the birthday (March 5) of one of Tony's best friends, the magician Penn Jillette. Penn inspired an essay in The Sun at the End of the Road.

The Best of Words on Birds

=Where is our intrepid birder now? He's in San Diego. Sold some books to the West Coast types.

=In honor of Jeff Reiter's wonderful bird book, we're going to feature a bird a month in this column. Here's the bird of the month for March...
Roufus Hummingbird (photo by Matt Miscewicz)

=One of Jeff's most popular Words on Birds columns came out this week (March 3) in 2010. It was about Cardinals. Naturally, that one made it into the book.

To Nudge The World

=Book of the Year winner Jim Slusher writes a column every week for the Daily Herald called "Letter to Readers". Two years ago this week (March 7) he wrote one that is timely to go back and read. It's about the value of art criticism. Seems appropriate as we head into Oscar week. Pick up your Book of the Year copy of To Nudge the World and read it there.

The Loop Files

=This is actually a momentous week in Loop (WLUP) history. March 6, 2018, The Loop was put to death. Illinois Entertainer told the story.  The last three songs The Loop played on the air were Motley Crue's "Shout at the Devil", Iron Maiden's "The Number of the Beast", and AC/DC's "Highway to Hell".

=Two Loopers are celebrating birthdays this week, Laura Witek (March 4) and Scott Dirks (March 5). Both tell great stories in the book, including the stories behind these photos.

=Author Randy Richardson is a die-hard Cubs fan, so naturally his murder mystery takes place in Wrigleyville. Fellow Cubs author Stuart Shea provided this blurb for the back cover of the book...

"Randy Richardson’s Lost in the Ivy expertly captures the weirdness and excitement of the streets that the Chicago Cubs—baseball’s weirdest and most exciting franchise—call home. And aside from being a terrific “I’ve been there” walk through Wrigleyville, it’s a cracking murder mystery to boot!"

Stuart Shea, author of "Wrigley Field: The Unauthorized Biography" and "Wrigley Field: THE LONG LIFE AND CONTENTIOUS TIMES OF THE FRIENDLY CONFINES"

=Randy has a new book coming out on Eckhartz Press later this year. More information coming soon.

Inside Melania

=Lauren LoGiudice brings her Misfit Variety show to the Annoyance March 13.  Show's at 9. Get your tickets here.

The Radio Hall of Fame

=The latest Illinois Entertainer is out and features suggestions for the next class of the Radio Hall of Fame. Public voting goes until April 1. Several Eckhartz Press authors are suggested, including Mitch Michaels (Doin the Cruise) and Bobby Skafish (We Have Company), as well as contributors to The Loop Files (Patti Haze, Bob Stroud, Kevin Matthews).

The Flip Side

=Last year's March issue featured an interview with Flip Side co-owner (and author) Larry Rosenbaum.

=The Flip Side is still getting great reviews. Click on this one below to read it.

=Dan McNeil was making the rounds in his native Northwest Indiana this week last year. He appeared on the Tom Lounges radio show, then made a few library appearances in Highland and Merrillville. Thanks so much to everyone who came out!

=This week (March 5) is also the birthday of former Bears quarterback Justin Fields. Dan McNeil wrote about Fields in I Bear Witness.

Last Comiskey

=Two of the people Ken Smoller features in Last Comiskey are celebrating birthdays this week as well. Former White Sox pitchers Scott Radinsky (March 3) and Wayne Edwards (March 7).

Ike & Me

=Former NBC news anchor Lester Holt is celebrating a birthday this week (March 8) too and is featured in the pages of Rich King's book Ike & Me.

=Author Bobby Skafish was making the publicity rounds this week in 2017 talking about his Eckhartz Press book We Have Company: Four Decades of Rock and Roll Encounters. Among his appearances, a visit to WCIU-TV's morning show.

Your Dime My Dance Floor

=Legendary Bears safety Doug Plank celebrates a birthday this week (March 4). This is what he had to say about Your Dime My Dance Floor author Chet Coppock...

"When I think of Chicago sports, I think of Chet Coppock. Chet is everywhere and he knows everyone. He has done everything there is to do in sports reporting and broadcasting."

=Janet Guthrie is a trailblazing female race car driver. Her birthday is March 7. Chet Coppock got to know Guthrie during his days in Indianapolis, and wrote about her in Your Dime My Dance Floor.

 The Unplanned Life

=This week in 2020, Roger Badesch's book The Unplanned Life became available for the first time via pre-sale. It immediately garnered praise from the dean of Chicago media.

“You may think you know Roger Badesch if you have listened over the years to his exact and artful news reports on radio, but between the covers of this book you will find so much more–a man of great depth, many passions and skills. His is a wonderful life that you can now share.”

Rick Kogan, Chicago Tribune, WGN Radio

=Harry Caray was born this week (March 1) in 1914. Chuck Quinzio has a great story about Harry that goes back to the Cubs playoff year in 1984. It's in the book Life Behind the Camera.

=Chuck Quinzio's harrowing tale of his life as a TV News cameraman garnered fans from across the spectrum, including Rob Reiner. The late filmmaker was born this week (March 6) in 1947.

The Daly News

=Chicago media critic Robert Feder wrote that one of the highlights of Joel Daly's memoir The Daly News is the inclusion of a few examples of his nightly commentaries from the Channel 7 News in the 1970s. One of those was delivered on the air this week (March 8) in 1972. You can read that free excerpt from Joel's book here.

The Living Wills

=On March 7, 2013, The Living Wills became the first Eckhartz Press book to be used in a high school's literature curriculum (it's not the last). Co-author Brendan Sullivan was on hand at Marist High School the day it was introduced at the school.

Hugh Hefner's First Funeral

=Pat Colander's book would go on to become the CWA Book of the Year in 2016. One of the book's biggest fans was Saturday Night Live alumnus Tim Kazurinsky, who is celebrating a birthday this week (March 3). Here's what Tim had to say...

As Paul Simon bookended…”Time it was, and what a time it was….A time of innocence.

And finally, Happy Birthday to another one of our award winning authors (March 2), Lee Kingsmill! Lee wrote the incredible Safe Inside.
