Publishing Portal--April 28, 2026

The latest news from Eckhartz Press, and a chance to peek into some of the great previous offerings from our humble little publishing company.

Book Launch Parties!

=There will be at least two in May. Here's a little more information about Vicki Atkinson's release party for her debut novel (and second book for Eckhartz Press) Slivers. (She also wrote about it in her blog).

=Randy Merkin will also have a book launch party in May. Actually his will come first. It will be on May 14th at Claim Company in Northbrook between 7-9pm. Come get your copy of Beyond the Glass!

Happy Birthday!

=Two Eckhartz Press authors are celebrating birthdays this week, and in an odd twist of fate, they are both named Robert. Happy birthday to Robert Conlon (Celtic Knot). His birthday is April 29. Another Happy birthday to Robert Williams (Bubble Boy). His birthday is April 30.

=This week in 1893 (May 1), an event happened in Chicago that was chronicled in Robert Conlon's book. It was the Columbian Exposition, and a lot of people say it was the one event that really put Chicago on the map. (Photo)

Two Chances to Meet Eckhartz Press authors this week!

And by chance, both are also writers for the Daily Herald.

Jim Slusher

=The acclaimed Book of the Year winner (To Nudge the World) Jim Slusher will be at the Aurora Public Library (Santori Branch) on  Thursday April 30, 7-8pm.

Jeff Reiter

=Jeff Reiter (The Best of Words on Birds) will be appearing at his alma mater, Washington and Lee University on May 2. Maybe you caught him this past weekend at the Wheaton Local Authors Fest

=If you do meet him this week, perhaps you'll get a chance to discuss his excellent Words on Birds column in the Daily Herald from last week.

South Side Memories

=Fellow Eckhartz Press author Gloria Golec joined Jeff Reiter at that local author event in Wheaton this past weekend. Here's a photo from the festivities...

Sirens in the Loop

=One of the most famous journalists to come out of City News Bureau of Chicago was Pulitzer Prize winner Mike Royko.  Mike passed away this week (April 29), in 1997. His widow Judy recently got a copy of Sirens in the Loop and reported that she enjoyed it very much, and was sharing it with their children.

Last Comiskey

=There are many ways that a book can become a film. In an unusual twist, Last Comiskey was actually a film before it became a book.

Chili Dog MVP

=Chili Dog MVP is going the other route. After starting out as a successful book, it has been made into a film and a docuseries. The gang all reconvenes in Denver (May 9) for SeriesFest 2026. That's where they pitch the series to distributors. Based on the reaction this thing has been getting, it bodes well for a successful weekend. Dick Allen's story is finally being told.

=By the way, acclaimed artist Todd Radom did the cover for Chili Dog MVP, and he also did the movie poster for the film My Father, Dick Allen.

40 Years, 40 Films

=The second Wednesday of every month, Nick Digilio picks a film to show for the crowd at Classic Cinema's Lake Theater. He has chosen Stripes. Show starts at 7pm on May 13.

Take Me Back to Chicago

=The song that inspired the title of Doug E. Jones's book Take Me Back to Chicago came out this week (May 1) in 1978. It's a bit of an earworm. If you don't know the song, here it is. Now whenever you hear about Doug's book, you'll hum this song. It's impossible to avoid.

The Kiss of Night

=Author Mark Wukas was featured this week last year, in Rick Kogan's piece in the Chicago Tribune...

=He also did this interview on the Minutia Men Celebrity Interview.

Mob Adjacent

=The man who ran the mob in Chicago for decades, Tony Accardo, would have been celebrating a birthday this week. He's not around anymore, but he certainly makes a few appearances in the Eckhartz Press book Mob Adjacent, by Jeffrey and Michael Gentile

The Flip Side and Doin the Cruise

=Two Eckhartz Press authors appeared on the same podcast this week last year. Larry Rosenbaum (The Flip Side) and Mitch Michaels (Doin the Cruise) were both featured in That Rock Show with Jim and Mark.

=This week marks the anniversary of the Kent State Massacre (May 4, 1970). One of our authors was actually there that day, and wrote about it in his memoir Doin the CruiseMitch Michaels. Mitch was already in radio in those days and it would be just a few short years later when he arrived on the dial in Chicago. He is now in the Illinois Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Your Dime, My Dance Floor

=April 30 would have been the birthday of Eckhartz Press author Chet Coppock, who wrote his last (and most highly regarded) book Your Dime, My Dance Floor for us in 2018. Chet died the following year, but as long as Eckhartz Press is in business, Chet's words and photos live on...

=April 30, 1971—The Milwaukee Bucks won the NBA championship. Chet was there. That's him with Oscar Robertson. It was Chet's first big job in broadcasting.

=This was Chet's final interview, taped just a week before he went to South Carolina. He perished in a car accident there. You can tell by watching this that Chet had no intention of slowing down...

The Loop Files

=Two of the contributors to The Loop Files were named nominees for the Radio Hall of Fame. Big Congratulations to Bob Stroud and Kevin Matthews. Both deserve enshrinement.

=Three of the contributors to the Loop Files are celebrating birthdays this week. Lee Abrams (April 29) was the man who created the Graffiti Loop era (middle of first photo) and Larry Wert (April 30) was the boss man during the second heyday of the Loop (in the late 80s/early 90s). In addition, Greg Gumbel (May 3) was on  hand during the most famous moment in Loop history, Disco Demolition. That's Greg below interviewing Steve Dahl that day at Comiskey Park. Unfortunately, Greg passed away in 2024.

Grammar Moses

=This week in 2024, Jim Baumann announced that he was retiring from the Daily Herald in his final Grammar Moses column . Jim says he's working on the great American novel in his retirement. Maybe that will lead to his second Eckhartz Press book.

*Happy Anniversary!

=Two Eckhartz Press books were officially released this week in 2020, Grace Fights Covid 19 by Ken Korber (May 1) and The Unplanned Life by Roger Badesch (May 3). This Q&A of Roger appeared on our website that week.

 EveryCubEver

=This week in 2019, the first edition of EveryCubEver was released. Author Rick Kaempfer appeared on WGN-TV Morning News doing a Cubs bit with Larry Potash, Mike Toomey, Pat Tomasulo, and Dean Richards. It led to Rick getting his own IMDB page. That same week the EveryCubEver launch party was held at Moretti's in Mt. Prospect. If you were one of the many thousands who bought that first edition, it's definitely time to update. The 7th edition is now available! It's a perfect Mother's Day gift for that Cub-fan mom in your family.

 Monkey in the Middle

=April 30, 1971—The Milwaukee Bucks won the NBA championship. Monkey in the Middle author Dobie Maxwell was a Bucks ball boy. Top row, third from the left.

=This week in 2016, Dobie Maxwell appeared on Mancow's show on the Loop. It was exactly ten years after Dobie's biggest fan Drew Olson joined OnMilwaukee.com. This is what Drew had to say about Dobie and his book...

  • “If you grew up in Milwaukee in the 1970s or ’80s, you knew about Samson – the huge, famous and hugely famous gorilla that resided at the Milwaukee County Zoo. Samson, who now resides in that “jungle in the sky,” thrilled generations of visitors, even when he was eating and sleeping. Dobie Maxwell’s book, Monkey in the Middle, tells the tale of a much lesser-known gorilla / bank robber in our shared hometown. Once you start reading this story, you might not feel like eating or sleeping until you’ve finished. It’s a story of friendship, loyalty, betrayal and conscience told by a comedian with a knack for pointing out absurdly funny moments during a white-knuckle rollercoaster ride.”

    Drew Olson | On-air host/ESPN Wisconsin

=Dobie often fills in for Drew on Milwaukee radio. He also co-hosts this podcast...

 Chasing the Lost City

=This week in 2018, Eckhartz Press author Tom Weinberg appeared on Chicago Tonight to talk about his fascinating new book Chasing the Lost City...

Ike & Me

=April 30, 1912 was the Opening day at Fenway Park. Ike & Me author Rich King might not have been there that day, but he spent lots of time there. When he retired they gave him a souvenir for the number of years he worked as a sportscaster.

Records Truly Is My Middle Name

=One of the stars of John Landecker's book, his father Werner Landecker, was born this week (April 30) in 1911. His story of growing up Jewish in Nazi Germany, going blind, and then moving to America to become a distinguished professor at the University of Michigan, is one you'll never forget. That's him on the right below. The man next to him is John's grandfather on his mom's side, William J. Records. Records became John's middle name.

=This week in 2013, John Landecker & Rick Kaempfer were interviewed by the Daily Herald about Landecker's memoir Records Truly Is My Middle Name

=This week is also Jay Leno's birthday (April 28). There's a memorable story in John Landecker's book about Leno, but Chuck Quinzio's book has got a photo. This week he trumps John.

Cheeseland

=This is the anniversary (April 28) of author Frederick Lee Brooke debuting his series of mystery books. Brooke is a big fan of Eckhartz Press author Randy Richardson's 2012 novel Cheeseland. Here's what he had to say about it...

  • If you liked Larry McMurtry’s The Last Picture Show, you’ll love Cheeseland, Chicago’s answer to that Texas classic. Highly recommended!

Frederick Lee Brooke, the Annie Ogden Mysteries

In Small Boxes

=Author Jim Kokoris (born May 4) is a fan of fellow author Ann Wilson's memoir In Small Boxes. This is what he had to say about her Eckhartz Press book...

  • At times, poignant, sad and very funny. A wonderfully unique coming of age story. We will all see pieces of ourselves and our lives
    in this book.

    — Jim Kokoris, author of four novels including It’s. Nice. Outside.

Grun Weiss Vor!

=One of the biggest stars to ever play for Green White Soccer Club, Illinois Soccer Hall of Famer Joe Filian is celebrating a birthday this week (May 1). Joe is featured prominently in the book Grun Weiss Vor, including this photo from his time on the New York Cosmos.

Rick and Dave

=During the pandemic Eckhartz Press publishers Rick Kaempfer and David Stern were Zoom-interviewed by the Chicago Writers Association about Eckhartz Press. This interview happened this week (May 2) in 2021.

Publishing Portal--March 9, 2026

The latest news from Eckhartz Press, and a chance to peek into some of the great previous offerings from our humble little publishing company.

Sirens in the Loop

=Another big week for Jim Elsener. The Chicago Tribune printed a fabulous piece about his new book.

=Jim Elsener's book launch party will be on Thursday March 19th, from 6-8pm at Kappy's American Restuarant at 7200 W. Dempster in Morton Grove. Fellow Eckhartz Press author Mark Wukas (The Kiss of Night) will be there too. We're expecting a ton of CNB veterans coming to this one. If you're a CNB alum, you're guaranteed to run into some old friends. Be there for the group photo!

=Jim will also be in Oak Park at the Book Loft on April 8th.

40 Years, 40 Films

=This Wednesday, March 11, Nick Digilio will be back at the Lake Theater in Oak Park for this month's Nick's Pix. He'll be screening the film Zero Dark Thirty. Come on by, pick up a copy of Nick's book, and watch the film. Nick goes up on stage before and after the movie to talk about it with the audience.

=Coming this Sunday, we hope you have this event marked on your calendar as well. Nick is going to be interviewed on-stage at the Museum of Broadcast Communications by Rick Kogan on March 15. This is a can't miss event. It's the same day as the Oscars, and Nick and Rick will be discussing the great films released this past year. Buying a ticket to the museum allows you to be a part of the audience.

=Here's another film anniversary relating to Nick's book. The film Lost in America was released on March 15, 1985. Nick picked the Albert Brooks classic as his Film of the Year for 1985. It still stands up today.

Celtic Knot

=Here's the next one to put on your calendar. March 15th at 3pm, Robert Conlon (Celtic Knot) will be appearing at the G-man tavern on Clark Street (near Wrigley Field) to talk about his book. It will be a conversation with fellow Eckhartz Press author (and Celtic Knot endorser) Brendan Sullivan (The Living Wills). Doors open at 2pm. It's a free event, but they'd like you to RSVP here.

=Eckhartz Press publishers Rick Kaempfer and Dave Stern will be traveling down to Mesa, Arizona this week for a screening (March 12) of the film based on the Chili Dog MVP book. It's called My Father Dick Allen. Among the dignitaries scheduled to be there, authors David Fletcher and John Owens, Producer Sharon Pannozzo, Emmy-Award winning director Andy Billman, Dick Allen's widow Willa Allen, Hall of Famer Fergie Jenkins, White Sox organist Nancy Faust, and more. It's the first event at the brand new Arizona Baseball Museum.

=Speaking of Nancy Faust. Her birthday is this week (March 11). The co-author of Chili Dog MVP, David Fletcher, talked about Nancy's importance in this podcast interview.  This photo of Nancy with Eckhartz Press publishers Rick and Dave was taken at a previous Chili Dog MVP book signing.

Records Truly Is My Middle Name

=Eckhartz Press author John Records Landecker isn't just a celebrity here in Chicago (and a Radio Hall of Famer), his daughter Amy is famous too. She returned to her hometown of Chicago to premiere her film last Thursday at the Music Box Theater. The film is a rom-com called "For Worse" and it's a heartwarming and hilarious film--written, directed, and starring Amy Landecker. Her husband Bradley Whitford also stars in the film. John is in it too! After the screening John interviewed Amy & Bradley on stage at the Music Box. It was a wonderful night that the packed house (people were standing in line for over an hour to get in) absolutely loved.

=This week in 2013, John Landecker started doing his media tour for his memoir Records Truly Is My Middle Name. It began with this incredible review of the book by Chicago media writer Robert FederThen John appeared on the television show Windy City Live. He was surprised live on the air with a phone call from his old friend, Larry Lujack. John's daughter Amy was also on the line to surprise him, but told the producers not to interupt Larry and John. She was enjoying listening to the old friends too much.

Always a Pleasure

=The sports world lost a giant this week, former Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz died at the age of 89. Chuck Swirsky featured Lou in his book Always A Pleasure.

=Chuck Swirsky has also known the great Stephen Curry since he was a young boy. Chuck was the Toronto Raptors announcer when Steph's dad Del Curry was a Raptor. That heartwarming story is in the pages of Always a Pleasure. Curry's birthday is this week (March 14)

=When Donald Trump lost in 2020, we assumed the interest would wane in this book written by Lauren LoGuidice. It's about the things she learned touring the country as a Melania impersonator. Well, it turns out she doesn't need to retire the act after all. Lauren is returning to town for another show...
Why I'm coming back: The world is on fire and every post on social is either "this is how it's burning" or "self care for surviving the flames." 🔥 We're all so sad - for good reason - but the most important thing is that we spend time in community. So I'm bringing the Misfit Variety Show back to the Chicago to gather the misfits together so we can laugh - together. It's the only way we're gonna get through this! So meet me at the Misfit Variety Show this Friday March 13 at the Annoyance.  Show's at 9. Get your tickets here.

=The new Bob Williams memoir Bubble Boy is about the first internet bubble at the turn of the century (among other things). This week marks the anniversary of a day in history (March 13, 1986) that leads to one of the most memorable scenes in Bubble Boy. It's the day that Microsoft went public. Trust us, this little nugget will pay off beautifully in the book. To tell you more would be a spoiler.

=This Wednesday, Eric Litt will make his sixth appearance on Minutia Men Celebrity Interview, picking this year's Oscar winners. If you're in an Oscar pool, you won't want to miss it.

 The Loop Files

=Happy birthday to one of the biggest stars in Loop history, Kevin Matthews (March 12).

=Kev finally made it to the Museum of Broadcast Communications to check out the Loop exhibit this past weekend. Here he is autographing his display. If you haven't come out to see it yet, why not?

=This week in 2024 a group of Loopers also gathered in NW Indiana.
Here are a few photos from a memorable afternoon. Note the plethora of former Loopers, including Mitch Michaels, John Landecker, Roman Sawczak, Rick Kaempfer, and Dan McNeil.

=This is a special Loop-related week for author Rick Kaempfer. This week in 1987 he was hired to work at the legendary radio station. That is the opening story in the book The Loop Files.

The Flip Side

=Ken Churilla was out and about this week last year in NW Indiana promoting The Flip Side. First, he and Flip Side co-owner Larry Rosenbaum appeared on Tom Lounges radio show  (3/4). Listen here.

=Then, Tom did his column about the book in the NW Indiana Times.

=From the Flip Side archives, Robin Trower (March 9) is celebrating a birthday this week. Black Oak Arkansas released their first album this week in 1971 (March 10). Naturally we have pictures of both (with the Rosenbaum brothers) in the Flip Side book...

Surviving Sue

=It's been out for a few years now, but it's incredible how often new reviews still come in about Vicki Atkinson's wonderful memoir, Surviving Sue. Here's another great example.

=Vicki's new novel Slivers is being prepared for publication as you read this. It won't be too long now.

Nose Over Toes

=This week in 2019, Janet Sutherland began her publicity tour for her book Nose Over Toes. One of the stops on that tour was a visit to WGN Radio.

=Janet is currently working on another book. It will be called "Great Dames: Women You Should Know"

Cheeseland

=This week in 2013, Randy Richardson made an appearance at The Book Stall in Winnetka to read, sign, and sell his Eckhartz Press book Cheeseland.

=Randy also has another Eckhartz Press book in the works (his 4th for us). It will be coming out later this year. More details in the coming weeks.

Monkey in the Middle

=Eckhartz Press author Dobie Maxwell released his memoir Monkey in the Middle on his birthday in 2016 (March 14), and it remains one of our top selling books. He made the Chicago media rounds when it came out, including an interview on WGN radio, hosted one of the all time great book launch parties at Zanies comedy club on Wells in Chicago, and then did another media tour in Milwaukee, which is where the book takes place.

I Bear Witness

=Dan McNeil does a deep dive into the Bears with this book, including what happened to some of the Bears after their playing days were over. One of them, tight end Chris Gedney, came to a very unhappy ending this week (March 9) in 2019.

Last Comiskey

=One of the players featured in Ken Smoller's book Last Comiskey was outfielder Phil Bradley, who was part of that 1990 White Sox team. He is celebrating a birthday this week (March 11)

=This week in 2018 we signed these two guys to a publishing deal, Bruce Bohrer and Russ Fahrner. (Photo with EP Co-publisher David Stern). A few months later they delivered the manuscript of their book Embrace Retirement.

 We Have Company

=One of Bobby Skafish's interview subjects from We Have Company: Four Decades of Rock and Roll Encounters is celebrating a birthday this week: Adam Clayton of U2 (March 13) rates his own chapter in Bobby's book.

=This week in 2017, Skafish appeared on WGN Radio with Dave Hoekstra.

The Balding Handbook

=David Stern's self help book for balding men is currently sold out, but not before it made its mark. This week in 2014, Dave appeared on Steve Cochran's show to talk about the book.

=This week is also the anniversary of the Ken doll (March 11, 1961). This photo from the Anger & Rage chapter of The Balding Handbook (The subtitle of the book is: The five stages of grieving for your hair loss), might give you an idea of one of Dave's suggestions.

The Daly News

=This week in 2014, Joel Daly appeared on Windy City Live to talk about his book The Daly News. It was a homecoming of sorts for Joel, because the show was filmed at Channel 7 in Chicago, where Joel had starred as an anchorman for nearly 40 years. After the interview we visited the news studio and chatted with his old friends and colleagues.

Close Encounters of a Chicago Kind

=Famous Chicago playwright Vicki Quade (Late Night Catechism) wrote a book for Eckhartz Press a few years ago about her entertaining encounters with everyday Chicagoans. She broke the book up into chapters based on topic. Considering that this week is the anniversary of O'Hare being named (March 13), it's a good week to pick up Close Encounters of a Chicago Kind and read the travel chapter.

Father Knows Nothing

=This week in 2015, the two Rick K's (Kogan and Kaempfer) chatted on the radio about Father Knows Nothing.

=It just so happens that it's also the birthday of Rick's middle son (photo) Johnny (March 12). Johnny is 28 years old now. On the day he was born, Rick called into John Landecker's radio show (WJMK) to announce the birth. The transcript of that birth is in the pages of Father Knows Nothing. It's also here, if you'd like to read it. The participants include John Landecker, Catherine Johns, and Richard Cantu.

Mob Adjacent

=One of the great things about the Gentile brother's book about growing up near the mob, Mob Adjacent, is the intersection of the crime world and Hollywood. For instance, this week's birthday girl (March 12) Liza Minelli, makes an appearance in the pages of the book.

=It seems only fitting that they are making this book into a film. Here's a promo about it...

Your Dime My Dance Floor

=When Eckhartz Press author Chet Coppock died unexpectedly in a car accident in 2018, his friends gathered to hold a tribute for him in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Among the people there that day was fellow broadcaster (and former Chicago Bear) Dan Jiggetts. Jiggetts celebrates a birthday today, March 10. (Photo L-R: Dan Jiggetts, Cheryl Raye Stout, Jim O'Donnell, Rick Kaempfer)
