"BP" writes...
"Rick, I just finished a book called Scorecasting. It’s Freakonomics for sports. They debunk a lot of sports myths like the hot shooting hand in basketball, why there is a home field advantage and why going for it on 4th down is always a good strategy. The last chapter concerns the Cubs and whether they are cursed. They go off on a tangent on ticket prices and find that while most MLB teams can track ticket sales closely to winning, the Cubs ticket sales are not related to winning. In fact, ticket sales have gone up when the Cubs were losing the most. The one factor that they found that tracks ticket sales is BEER PRICES at Wrigley. Beer goes up, people stay away. Which is why Wrigley has some of the cheapest beer in MLB."
Interesting indeed. I really never considered $7 beer cheap, but now that you mention it, I think it was $9.50 in Colorado when I went to a game there a couple of summers ago. By the way, I went to Wrigley this weekend and had a non-alcoholic beer (yes, they have them). It was only $3.50.

Jerry Garcia
From this morning's The Olde Disc Jockey Almanac...
"April 4, 1996…Grateful Dead leader Jerry Garcia's ashes were scattered in the Ganges River in India by Dead guitarist Bob Weir and Garcia's widow, Deborah."
I've been listening to the Grateful Dead again lately, and this is one of the songs that I'm just starting to appreciate...

Starlin Castro
Sure, it was a rough weekend for the Cubs (losing 2 out of 3 to the Pirates?), but there was one bright spot.
Starlin Castro certainly looks like a keeper, doesn't he?

Coming this weekend
Saturday morning I'll be posting a brand new Chicago Radio Spotlight interview. This week I interviewed WILV Rewind 100's Megan Reed.
I'm also going to the Cubs game on Saturday with my son Johnny. Looks like I'll be drinking coffee instead of beer this year. We're still in the middle of Extreme Lent.
I'll provide an update on how that's been going (Hint: Not so good) in my regular Father Knows Nothing column on Sunday.
Have a great weekend, and don't call me today.
Mr. Kaempfer can't come to the phone right now because it's opening day at Wrigley Field. Please leave a message and he'll get back to you when the Cubs are out of it...probably sometime in late May.

Two Perfect Days At Wrigley Field
I posted this week's "A Suburban Dad" guest column at Kim Strickland's "A City Mom" blog on ChicagoNow. This week's is about...you guessed it...opening day.
I highlighted my two most perfect days ever at my favorite place in the world.

Wild Thing
This is one of those great rock and roll stories, and it happened exactly 45 years ago today. From Bob Dearborn's The Olde Disc Jockey's Almanac...
"April 1, 1966…In London, the Troggs used 45 minutes of spare studio time to record "Wild Thing."
Obviously it became their biggest hit. It's an absolute classic...

Opening Day 1973
One of the most dramatic opening days in Cubs history had an unlikely hero.
The Cubs were down a run in the bottom of the ninth.
Joe Pepitone led off the inning with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Cleo James. Ron Santo got on base thanks to an error by Expos 2B Ron Hunt, and was also replaced by a pinch runner. Glenn Beckert walked to load the bases.
The Expos brought in their closer Mike Marshall, the best closer in baseball. He promptly walked Randy Hundley to tie the game, but he buckled down and got Don Kessinger to pop out down the line, and struck out Jim Hickman.
That brought up Cubs lead off man Rick Monday. The bases were loaded. The score was tied 2-2. It was the bottom of the ninth. Marshall vs. Monday. Marshall knew he couldn't give Monday anything to hit, but he tried to be a little too fine around the plate, and eventually walked him...to bring in the winning run.
Ron Santo's pinch runner scored that winning run. He was sent to the minors after that and never again appeared in another major league game as a player.
His name was Tony LaRussa.

Donating Goats?
It's not often that the Cubs and Cubs fans make it on TMZ, but today they did. There's a story about Cub fans donating goats to needy families...to try and reverse the curse.
I suppose it can't hurt, but can't we all just agree that this goat curse is a bunch of a hooey?

SI and the Cubs
Sports Illustrated has put many of their old archived articles online, and I've been going through them to find some gems about the Cubs.
This one was from December 10, 1984. It's about Rick Sutcliffe's decision whether or not to stay with the Cubs. He has offers from eight teams. The cover story of this issue is about a certain rookie on the Bulls who looks like he might just turn into something.
Waiting On Deck For A Shipload Of Money
Rick Sutcliffe is in the easy chair as the Cubs attempt to salvage last season's pitching staff.

SI and the Cubs
Sports Illustrated has put their archived articles online, and I'm going to be featuring some of the articles they wrote about the Cubs.
This one was on July 7, 1980. It was about the fact that Wrigley Field still didn't have lights. The story about the Olympic athletes that were affected by the 1980 boycott was on the cover...
One Place That Hasn't Seen The Light
Chicago's Wrigley Field has grass on the ground and ivy on the walls and is the only park where there are never any night games.
It's another recommended time capsule. The article is about PK Wrigley; his stubborn approach and frugality, and the real reason why the Cubs still didn't have lights in 1980.

Pick a Headline
Imagine picking the top story to feature on the front page of your newspaper on this day forty years ago....
March 29, 1971…Lt. William Calley Jr., of the U.S. Army, was found guilty of the premeditated murder of at least 22 Vietnamese civilians. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. The trial was the result of the My Lai massacre in Vietnam on March 16, 1968.
March 29, 1971…A jury in Los Angeles recommended the death penalty for Charles Manson and three female followers for the 1969 Tate-La Bianca murders. The death sentences were later commuted to life in prison.
Some headline writer's head must have exploded at the New York Post.

Leo's Bums Rap For The Cubs
"Chicago's genteel old North Side has a pennant contender after lo these many years, egged on by a raucous bleacher section and -- Mr. Wrigley should chew on another cud -- the irrepressible Durocher."
I read the article, and I've got a good feeling about the Cubs in 1969. Maybe this really is our year.
I kid, but the article is a time capsule gem. I particularly love the part about the Bleacher Bums. Highly recommended.

Steve Vasoli
Landecker & the Legends has lost another family member.
Steve Vasoli was our keyboardist, but he was more than that. He was the life source of the band. He was always smiling, always happy, always had a great attitude. If you ever saw the Legends live, you remember Steve. He took center stage for a few of our numbers, including the old Herman's Hermits song "Henry VIII."
One of my favorite things about touring Chicagoland with Landecker and the Legends was the kibitzing before and after the shows with the guys in the band. Steve was a fun guy to talk to--he could always make me laugh.
He left the Legends after we stopped touring to care for his aging mother, but he was always a part of the band.
I felt like I got the wind knocked out of me when I heard the news yesterday that he passed away suddenly. He was only 54 years old.
It's impossible to remember him, without seeing his smile.
RIP Steve. You will be missed.

35 years ago today Genesis began their first North American tour without Peter Gabriel. I didn't really know Genesis until after Peter Gabriel left the band (other than what I've heard on old records), so I thought I'd go back to see if there were any videos.

I've had a bit of a rough week because the kids are home for spring break, so I haven't had time to do a Chicago Radio Spotlight interview. That will return a week from Saturday. I will, however, be posting my latest Father Knows Nothing column. This week's column will be called "Extreme Lent Bites Back."

Cubs roster decisions likely coming today
So says the Chicago Sun Times.
Among the people on the bubble: Andrew Cashner (starter or reliever), Carlos Silva (long reliever, starter or out of here), Reed Johnson (5th outfielder), Fernando Perez (5th outfielder), Augie Ojeda (utility, minors, or DL?), Darwin Barney (platoon 2B, utility, or minors), Blake DeWitt (platoon 2B or minors), Scotty Moore (platoon 2B or minors), and Bobby Scales (platoon 2B, utility or minors).
Should be interesting.

Jokes for a Monday morning
Contributed by "AH," who of course, is not blonde...
DISNEYLAND
Two blondes were going to Disneyland . They were driving on the Interstate when they saw the sign that said "Disneyland LEFT." They started crying and turned around and went home.
CAR TROUBLE
A blonde pushes her BMW into a gas station. She tells the mechanic it died. After he works on it for a few minutes, it is idling smoothly.
She says, 'What's the story?'
He replies, 'Just crap in the carburetor'
She asks, 'How often do I have to do that?'
AT THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE
A gorgeous young redhead goes into the doctor's office and said that her body hurt wherever she touched it.
'Impossible!' says the doctor.. 'Show me.'
The redhead took her finger, pushed on her left shoulder and screamed, then she pushed her elbow and screamed even more. She pushed her knee and screamed; likewise she pushed her ankle and screamed. Everywhere she touched made her scream.
The doctor said, 'You're not really a redhead, are you?
'Well, no' she said, 'I'm actually a blonde.'
'I thought so,' the doctor said, 'Your finger is broken.'
KNITTING
A highway patrolman pulled alongside a speeding car on the freeway. Glancing at the car, he was astounded to see that the blonde behind the wheel was knitting!
Realizing that she was oblivious to his flashing lights and siren, the trooper cranked down his window, turned on his bullhorn and yelled, 'PULL OVER!'
'NO!' the blonde yelled back, 'IT'S A SCARF!'
IN A VACUUM
A blonde was playing Trivial Pursuit one night... It was her turn. She rolled the dice and she landed on Science & Nature. Her question was, 'If you are in a vacuum and someone calls your name, can you hear it?' She thought for a time and then asked, 'Is it on or off?'
TIMING
A girl was visiting her blonde friend, who had acquired two new dogs, and asked her what their names were. The blonde responded by saying that one was named Rolex and one was named Timex. Her friend said, 'Whoever heard of someone naming dogs like that?' 'HELLLOOOOOOO......,' answered the blonde. 'They're watch dogs'!
First Day of Spring
The boys are home for spring break all week, so I may not be able to post quite as often this week.

Alex Chilton
Last St. Patrick's day the world lost one of the great rock and roll singers, Alex Chilton from the Box Tops. He was only 59.
St. Patrick's Day
Yes, I realize I'm not Irish, but my wife is Irish, and therefore, my boys are partially Irish too. The picture on the left was taken at one of our many St. Patrick's Day parades. That's Bridget and me with our baby boy Tommy in 1997.
I always enjoyed the South Side parade, which has sadly been discontinued. A few years ago I asked my friend Brendan Sullivan to write a guest blog for me about growing up South Side Irish, which is something I like to feature every year.
Of course, St. Patrick's Day also wouldn't be complete without a bunch of Irish jokes. Enjoy the following crop contributed by "CM"...
Irish Jokes
Two Irishmen, Patrick Murphy and Shawn O'Brian grew up together and were lifelong friends. But alas, Patrick developed cancer, and was dying. While on his deathbed, Patrick called to his buddy, Shawn, "O'Brian, come 'ere. I 'ave a request for ye." Shawn walked to his friend's bedside and kneels.
"Shawny ole boy, we've been friends all our lives, and now I'm leaving 'ere. I 'ave one last request fir ye to do."
O'Brian burst into tears, "Anything Patrick, anything ye wish. It's done."
"Well, under me bed is a box containing a bottle of the finest whiskey in all of Ireland. Bottled the year I was born it was. After I die, and they plant me in the ground, I want you to pour that fine whiskey over me grave so it might soak into me bones and I'll be able to enjoy it for all eternity."
O'Brian was overcome by the beauty and in the true Irish spirit of his friend's request, he asked, "Aye, tis a fine thing you ask of me, and I will pour the whiskey. But, might I strain it through me kidneys first?"

Three guys, one Irish, one English, and one Scottish, are out walking along the beach together one day. They come across a lantern and a Genie pops out of it. "I will give you each one wish, that's three wishes in total", says the Genie.
The Scottish guy says, "I am a fisherman, my Dad's a fisherman, his Dad was a fisherman and my son will be one too. I want all the oceans full of fish for all eternity." So, with a blink of the Genie's eye FOOM! the oceans were teaming with fish.
The Englishman was amazed, so he said, "I want a wall around England, protecting her, so that no one will get in for all eternity." Again, with a blink of the Genie's eye POOF! there was a huge wall around England.
The Irishman asks, "I'm very curious. Please tell me more about this wall." The Genie explains, "well, it's about 150 feet high, 50 feet thick, protecting England so that nothing can get in or out."
The Irishman says, "Fill it up with water."

An aging man lived alone in Ireland. His only son was in Long Kesh Prison, and he didn't know anyone who would spade up his potato garden. The old man wrote to his son about it, and received this reply, "For HEAVENS SAKE, don't dig up that garden, that's where I buried the GUNS!!!!!"
At 4 A.M. the next morning, a dozen British soldiers showed up and dug up the entire garden, but didn't find any guns. Confused, the man wrote to his son telling him what happened and asking him what to do next.
His son's reply was: "Just plant your potatoes."

Two Irishmen, Patrick & Michael, were adrift in a lifeboat following a dramatic escape from a burning freighter. While rummaging through the boat's provisions, Patrick stumbled across an old lamp. Secretly hoping that a genie would appear, he rubbed the lamp vigorously To the amazement of Patrick, a genie came forth. This particular genie, however, stated that he could only deliver one wish, not the standard three. Without giving much thought to the matter, Patrick blurted out, "Make the entire ocean into Guinness Beer!" The genie clapped his hands with a deafening crash, and immediately the entire sea turned into the finest brew ever sampled by mortals. Simultaneously, the genie vanished. Only the gentle lapping of Guinness on the hull broke the stillness as the two men considered their circumstances. Michael looked disgustedly at Patrick whose wish had been granted. After a long, tension-filled moment, he spoke: "Nice going Patrick! Now we're going to have to pee in the boat!

An Irishman and an American were sitting in the bar at Shannon Airport.
"I've come to meet my brother," said the Irishman. "He's due to fly in from America in an hour's time. It's his first trip home in forty years".
"Will you be able to recognize him?" asked the American.
"I'm sure I won't," said the Irishman, "after all, he's been away for a long time".
"I wonder if he'll recognize you?" said the American.
"Of course he will," said the Irishman. "Sure, an' I haven't been away at all".

His wife had been killed in an accident and the police were questioning Finnegan.
"Did she say anything before she died?" asked the sergeant.
"She spoke without interruption for about forty years," said the Irishman.

A young gentleman sitting at a bar with his pet pig asks for a couple of drinks. The confused bartender said no animals were allowed at the bar. The man proceeded to say "Ah, but this is a very special pig. Just last week there was a fire in the house and that pig came charging out of his pen into the house and woke us all up. Then a few days later my son fell into the pool and that pig was grazing out on the lawn, and he came running and jumped into the pool and saved my son. ""Well " said the bartended "I guess this pig is very special so I'll get him a drink. By the way I noticed that he is missing one leg, what happened? " "Well said the young man, when you got a pig this good you don't eat him all at once !!!"

Starlin Castro
The kid shortstop for the Cubs is quietly hitting the heck out of the ball in spring training this year. He's one of the legitimate reasons to be excited about this season (there are a few).
But he won't be batting leadoff.
Mike Quade has made that clear. Castro is the #2 hitter in the lineup, at least for now.

Keep on Lovin' You
I was a senior in high school when this song came out thirty years ago. (It was #1 on this day in 1981.) I always thought it was a lame song, but I never disrespected its power to set the mood. (Don't give me that look--I was in high school. I needed all the help I could get.)
Remember when MTV videos tried to tell a story? This one's pretty hokey (OK, extremely hokey), but I do have fond memories of those old school music videos.

Bartman Documentary
ESPN has produced a documentary film about the Steve Bartman game as part of their 30 at 30 series, and it looks like it will debut next month.
The producer of that documentary happened to see the following video on Just One Bad Century, and contacted Dane Placko to be a part of his film. Dane was interviewed for it last year, and I'm pretty sure he will be in the final cut...

Dewitt and Baker
According to the Sporting News, it looks like those Michael Young rumors are not true, and the Cubs are happy going with a platoon of Blake DeWitt and Geoff Baker at second base.
Oy.

I don't want to be alarmist, but that's about as good as the Mike Tyson/Steve Dillard combination from 1980. (They hit 6 homers, 42 RBI, and batted .230) The only difference is that those guys had much better mustaches.
Oy.

Dismantling a Dynasty
On this day in 1911, exactly one hundred years ago, the Chicago Cubs began dismantling their dynasty when they sold Harry Steinfeldt to the Boston Braves.
Who was Harry? He was the Pete Best of the Cubs most famous infield that included Tinker, Evers and Chance. But Harry was more than an extra. He was the MVP of the 1906 pennant winners, an excellent fielder (like the others), and probably their top clutch hitter during the seasons they went to 4 World Series in 5 years.
His name just wasn't poetic enough. Try rhyming Steinfeldt sometime.
By the way, he's the one on the far left in this picture. You may have seen the picture before with his body cropped out.
It ain't easy bein' a Steinfeldt.

The Ides of March
Since today is the Ides of March, it seems fitting to feature this great song from Chicago's very own Ides of March...

Pi Day
My mathlete son informed me this morning that today was "Pie day", and I just figured out what he meant a few minutes ago. D'oh! It's Pi day, not Pie day.
March 14. 3/14. 3.14
Whoo boy. I'm slow and getting slower.

Me and Bobby McGee
#1 on this day exactly 40 years ago today. Janis wasn't around to see it. She died the previous October. The song, by the way, was written by Kris Kristofferson. This is the only live version I could find of Janis singing it (shortly before her death), and she mentions that she thinks Kris is going to become famous someday...

Coming this weekend
I know we'll be losing an hour of sleep this weekend (spring ahead--move the clocks up an hour), but I hope you'll still have time to check out my weekend offerings.
This weekend I interview WGN sportscaster Judd Sirott for Chicago Radio Spotlight. I'll be posting it on Saturday morning.
On Sunday, I'll post my latest Father Knows Nothing column. It will be about a battle I finally lost after 47 years of valiantly fighting it.
Have a great weekend!

E-mails, we get e-mails
My buddy Brent, a long-time vegetarian, is shocked (shocked!) that I'm becoming a vegetarian for Lent. (I once asked him to write a piece for this blog about what it's like to be a vegetarian, which I thought was pretty darn funny.)
He sent me the following e-mail yesterday, with the 5 reasons why Rick can't possibly become a vegetarian...
1. Wait, there’s no eggs in eggplant?
2. He doesn’t even own a pair of Birkenstocks
3. Germans are not huggers, much less tree huggers
4. Anytime someone say Peta, he giggles
5. Tofu looks like my luffa sponge, and tastes like it too.

God Only Knows
Bob Dearborn's almanac really has something interesting every day, at least for someone like me that likes music from the 60s, 70s and 80s. I really thought I had an encyclopedic knowledge of that era's music, but he always has something I had never heard before. Like this little item from 45 years ago today...
March 10, 1966…Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys recorded the instrumental track for "God Only Knows." There were 23 studio musicians involved, but none of the Beach Boys played on the session. The vocals were recorded over the following month by three members of the group: Carl Wilson singing lead, Brian Wilson and Bruce Johnston doing backup vocals, probably the only well-known Beach Boys track that has just three voices on it. Mojo magazine ranked "God Only Knows" as the 13th-greatest song of all time.
Great, great song. Probably my second favorite Beach Boys record...

Garza watch
I'm not panicking yet, but has anyone else noticed that Matt Garza is getting lit up in spring training this year?
Yesterday he gave up six runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Keith Moon
From The Olde Disc Jockey's Almanac this morning, 35 years ago today was a bad one for Keith Moon and the Who...
"March 9, 1976…For the second time, the Who's Keith Moon collapsed while performing at a show, this time at Boston Garden. Though drug and alcohol abuse were again the culprits, singer Roger Daltrey told the crowd that Moon was suffering from the flu. The performance ended at that point but the group played a make-good concert for ticketholders on April 1."
Here's a video of another time he passed out on stage. You can see Roger and Pete discussing what to do, and Roger saying "He's out cold." Then you see Keith actually being carried off the stage. It's a pretty compelling video.

Yahoo Sports take a look inside the numbers so far this spring for the fiesty and unlikable Carlos Silva.
It ain't pretty.
Second Jobs
Back in the old days, baseball players couldn't make ends meet with their baseball salaries, so many of them took second jobs.
Some of their more interesting jobs are this week's Tale from a Bad Century at JOBC.

Jennifer Aniston's viral video
Calling it a viral video doesn't seem right (don't you have to earn that?), but I'm going to play along this one time. I have a feeling we'll be seeing more of these and less actual commercials...

Tina Turner
Exactly 45 years ago today (info courtesy Bob Dearborn's The Olde Disc Jockey's Almanac)...
I still think it's her all-time most powerful song...

George Will
I almost never agree with George Will, but I do like him for some reason--maybe it's a bond among fellow Cub fans.
But I'm guessing that his conservative friends are not happy with what he wrote in yesterday's Washington Post about what will happen if some of these 2012 Republican hopefuls don't stop spouting the crazy...
"The nominee may emerge much diminished by involvement in a process cluttered with careless, delusional, egomaniacal, spotlight-chasing candidates to whom the sensible American majority would never entrust a lemonade stand, much less nuclear weapons."
Ouch.
DJ Who?
So who was that kid in the double-flap college-style helmet with no name on his back that hit the 2-run walk off homer in the Cubs first televised game of spring training yesterday?
His name is DJ LeMahieu, and he's another former LSU guy. The Cubs drafted him in 2009 (2nd round) after he led the Tigers to the College World Series title.
He played for Class A Daytona last year and hit .314 with 73 RBI and 15 stolen bases. He looks like a pretty good prospect. He's a 22-year-old shortstop.
