John is retired now, but he's not sitting on his Lazy Boy and watching the Cubs. He's out in LA, hobnobbing with his movie-star daughter Amy. He clearly didn't recover too quickly from that remark. It could have still been saved at that point. "By that, honey, I meant that you stole my heart."

Trump's campaign advisor was either fired or resigned over the weekend because of the Megyn Kelly controversy.

He may be bufoony, but every Sunday talk show yesterday was all about Trump, and in the first poll since the debate he actually increased his lead.

Spanish-language radio and TV are quietly assembling an impressive sports lineup. I know when I can't find a soccer game I'm looking for, the first place I look is Spanish-language TV.

RIP Frank Gifford

Sad news over the weekend. Former football great and MNF announcer Frank Gifford has passed away. He was 84 years old. (Photo: 1960 Topps Football Card)

I will always remember Frank as one of the announcers who delivered the most painful news of my childhood--the death of John Lennon. He and Howard Cosell reported the news in the middle of a Monday Night Football game.

I've read a lot of the tributes to Frank, but here's an article that wasn't mentioned by any of them. It's an excerpt from the book about Johnny Carson, and it's called: The Night Johnny Carson Found Out His Wife Was Banging Frank Gifford.

Patrick Kane

This story is not good. From what I know of Kane, and his past transgressions, this is a giant beeping uh oh.

His home has been searched by police in a rape investigation.

The NHL has confirmed they are following this case, and the Chicago Blackhawks released a statement saying, "We are aware of the matter and are in the process of gathering information. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time."

This Year's Radio Hall of Fame Ballot

The list of people nominated was released yesterday, and once again John Records Landecker is not on the list. There are a few with Chicago connections however, including Eric Ferguson and Kathy Hart, and Tom Kent.

RIP Jim Lyman

I never met Jim in person, but we did communicate frequently via e-mail while he produced Mancow's show and the experimental morning show that followed it. Only 42 years old when he died. Way too young. From today's RAMP Newsletter...


Funeral services will be held tomorrow for Chicago radio vet Jim Lynam, who died early Tuesday morning. According to Chicagoland Radio And Media, Lynam was stricken with a sudden aortic dissection and underwent emergency heart surgery on Monday night, but did not survive the procedure. Lynam, who turned 42 last month, had been doing afternoons on Suburban Chicago Classic Hits WFXF (103.9 The Fox), but he's probably best known for his 11-year run on WKQX (Q101), where he was a contributor to (and later, Executive Producer of) Mancow's Morning Madhouse. After Mancow's departure, Lynam remained with the station until 2009. Lynam joined WFXF in December of 2014, reuniting him with his former Q101 colleague, Fox morning personality Brian Sherman. In a Facebook post, Sherman said, "Jim and I have worked off and on together over the last 10 years. Those who knew him knew that he could be loud and to the point. But mostly, the people that knew him will always remember he could be compassionate and larger than life. We may have lost him this morning due to complications of emergency heart surgery, however his heart is what made him the most memorable. It is what I will remember the most." Visitation will take place today from 2-9pm at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 185 E. Northwest Highway in Palatine, IL. Funeral services will be held tomorrow, August 7 at 11am at St. Anne Church, 120 Ela Street in Barrington, IL. Lynam leaves behind a wife and two young sons.

After Tonight's Final Daily Show...

...the Daily Show set will be dismantled and given to the Newseum in Washington. There it will remain on display. Seems like a fitting tribute to me.

But what if the master you want to serve is to somehow communicate the entirety of your experience of Anglo-Saxon poetry, in a single poem? That’s when something like nonsense comes into its own. The wonder of it is not that it makes something out of nothing, or that it is without sense—but actually that it’s exploding with sense. It's not for when you have nothing to say, but when you have many things to say at once.

Most writers maintain a blog to stay in touch with their readers and promote their work. But it's one thing to write a blog, and another to attract readers to it. This piece by Orbit Media has facts and figures backed up by research.  We will warn you in advance. The ideal blog length for SEO purposes is much longer than you'd think. A short excerpt...

Think about it this way: Google is a research tool. Longer pages have more opportunities to indicate their relevance. Google sees longer pages as more likely to contain the answer to the searcher’s question.

Another reason is links. When MOZ analyzed 3,800 posts on their own blog, they found that the longer posts get linked to more often. Longer pages generally attract more links, and these links support a higher rank.

The ideal length for a search optimized blog post is 1,500 words.

 

Social Media Grammar Tips for Authors
My kids mock me because even my texts include proper punctuation. But when you're writing in 140 characters or less, that can really hold you back. This piece gives you seven grammar rules that you need to keep in mind when you're writing on social media. Shortcuts are OK, but mistakes in these seven areas make you look like a lousy writer. Here's one example...

If you have two sentences, please put a period between them. If you like semicolons and your sentences are closely related, use a semicolon. If you are using a conjunction like and or but, you can use a comma. What I am telling you is don’t use a comma alone to separate sentences

This is a great piece in Time Magazine that shows how the times have changed for female authors. There are some great photos to illustrate it. Here's a short excerpt from the text...

In a LIFE photo essay called “What it takes to be a lady author anymore,” Rejaunier posed for shots that demonstrated how a woman should promote her literary work. A successful lady author, the captions suggested, must “swim a little,” “exercise in a bikini” and be “photographed in bed.” The essay attributed the success of her book, a novel based on the dark side of the modeling world, to Rejaunier’s beauty rather than her literary talents: “Just possibly because she smiles so prettily on the book jacket (the back and the front of the book) The Beauty Trap is now in its fourth printing.”

Music critic Bill Wyman took a shot at it, and I have to give him credit. This is a pretty strong list. I don't have too many problems with it. I think #2 is ranked too high, and I wouldn't put #9 in the top ten, but not bad. For me, it's hard to keep "Black Dog", "Rock and Roll", "Fool in the Rain" and "Dyer Maker" out of the top ten, but that just shows you how strong their catalog is.

Chicago Radio Ratings

From this morning's Tom Taylor column, an analysis of the latest Chicago radio ratings...

Chicago – Nobody manages to achieve a 6.0-share, and talk WGN misses the spike from the Stanley Cup-winning Blackhawks. So who’s #1? That honor still goes to iHeart’s urban AC WVAZ (6.8-6.5-5.8). Next is Hubbard’s hot AC “Mix” WTMX (4.8-5.0-5.0) and third is CBS all-newser WBBM (5.3-4.6-4.7). WBBM’s usual simulcast partner is WCFS/105.9, but during Cubs baseball the FM stays with the news product while WBBM runs the games. This time, WCFS moves 2.4-2.1-2.2. Fourth is CBS classic hits WJMK (3.5-4.0-4.1) and fifth is iHeart’s top 40 “Kiss 103.5” WKSC (3.9-4.1-3.9). Nice recent moves by urban sister WGCI (3.3-3.8-3.8). Then comes WGN, 3.3-4.3-3.7. How much does ’GN miss the Blackhawks in their run to glory? In the June book, WGN was #1 at nights. Now it’s #20. iHeart’s hot AC WLIT trails off, 3.5-3.6-3.2. Could Cumulus talker WLS fall below a 1.0-share, one of these days? It’s off 1.1-1.1-1.0. The Windy City’s leading cume station is top 40 “Kiss” at 2,355,000.

RIP Cilla Black

Cilla Black passed away this weekend at the age of 72.

Her name isn't really known to American audiences, but she was a 50-year star in England. She was good friends with the Beatles and was represented by their agent Brian Epstein. This song below was written for her by Paul McCartney and produced and recorded by George Martin.

Landecker's Last Show

I signed on to be his producer 22 years ago, and I shared some of the most important moments of my life with him--from the birth of my three kids, to the renewing of my marriage vows, to the best time I've ever had doing radio, to the first and only time I've ever been fired (let's call it a non-renewal), to the writing of his memoirs. Wishing my good friend John Landecker a great last show on WLS tonight. I will definitely be tuning in.

RIP Mike Pyle

He was the center of the 1963 Bears championship team, and a longtime broadcaster after his playing days (which is when I met him). Pyle had been suffering from dementia for years, and his family has sent his brain to be studied to see if he was suffering from CTE.

Mike Pyle was 76 years old.

Waddle & Silvy Get National Exposure

This morning's Radio Online has the details about the national exposure that ESPN Radio will be giving to Chicago's AM 1000 afternoon team of Tom Waddle and Marc Silverman...

During the month of August, ESPN Radio will offer listeners three teams between 10am–1pm ET, featuring commentators who currently host shows on ESPN's owned and operated stations in Los Angeles and Chicago. "ESPN Radio has an extensive pool of talent from our national network, local stations and ESPN television," said VP/Network Audio Content David Roberts. "We're excited to take advantage of this opportunity to give national radio exposure to our local hosts."

ESPN Chicago 1000's Waddle & Silvy will host the week of August 24. Former Bears receiver Tom Waddle and Marc Silverman host a daily show in Chicago from 2-6pm CT.

MSNBC Makes Changes Official

It was leaked out last week that this day was coming for a few of these shows, but the announcement was officially made yesterday. The Cycle, Now with Alex Wagner, and the Ed Show are out. Alex Wagner and Ari Melber will be kept on in some other capacity, but the rest of the hosts are goners including Ed Schultz, Abby Huntsman, Toure, and Crystal Ball.

Sounds to me like MSNBC is going for more hard news coverage. To be honest, as someone who would like to be able to watch actual news occasionally, I'm all for that.

Binge Reading Trump

Donald Trump has written eight books, and Washington Post writer Carlos Lozoda binge-read them all to get a better feeling for the real Donald. His conclusion...

Is there a single word that combines revulsion, amusement, respect and confusion? That is how it feels, sometimes by turns, often all at once, to binge on Trump’s writings. Over the course of 2,212 pages, I encountered a world where bragging is breathing and insulting is talking, where repetition and contradiction come standard, where vengefulness and insecurity erupt at random.

There are no words that describe the overwhelming feelings and emotions that are washing over me from reading all the posts on social media. Thank you is an understatement. In radio you spend a lot of time not knowing who is listening. Even if your number one you really don't know. Well I don't care if I'm number one or 21st. I know now. Wow . Unbelievable. THANK YOU..... now I have to pull my shit together..I have a touch tone next hour!

The New Daily Show

My two older sons and I have been watching the end of the Daily Show's run with melancholy. To us, it's a sane way of making sense of an insane political world. We know the Daily Show will continue without Jon Stewart, but we've been fearing it will change dramatically.

One day, Cutler will just amble out onto the field in cargo shorts and demand to hand the ball off to Rob Schneider. It’s coming. I can feel it. He’ll never leave Chicago. Roll Tape... Landecker's Leaving

Cumulus Media announced that legendary personality John Records Landecker is indeed leaving Classic Hits WLS-FM/Chicago this week. His final show on the station will be this Friday, July 31 from 8-11pm. Most of Landecker's remarkable 40-year radio career has been spent in Chicago, starting in 1972 as the night jock on WLS-AM, where he ruled for nearly a decade. Other stops include WLUP, WAGO, WCKG, WJMK, WZZN and WGN. Landecker started his radio career in his hometown of Ann Arbor, MI and he's also worked in Philadelphia, Cleveland and Toronto. Further cementing his enduring legacy, Landecker is enshrined in the Radio wing of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 2013 he published his autobiography, Records Truly Is My Middle Name.

Jan Jeffries, SVP, Corporate Programming for Cumulus commented, "It may be the end of an era as John Records Landecker hangs up his headphones; however his influence and legend will live forever. Working with John in the '80s in Chicago and most recently here at WLS-FM, has been a career highlight. One of the most memorable times is noted in the last chapter of John's book where the weekly ratings ranked WLS-FM nights No. 1 in key demographics. Personality plus. And yes, Records truly is his middle name."

Landecker remarked, "Why now? Hey, my biological grandfather clock is ticking and it's time to move on. That, and my wife thinks I'm a creative genius, so I definitely want to spend more time with her! My eternal gratitude to Jan Jeffries for the chance to come back and wrap it up in Chicago on WLS. I've had a great time and worked with fantastic people. Who could ask for more than that?" Following Landecker's Friday sign-off, frequent guest host Jeff Davis will cover nights on WLS-FM until a new host is named.

By the way, his actual last show is Friday night and he's going to be given some freedom for once. I'll be checking it out.
