I'm guessing there will be a lot of head-bobbing at desks around Chicagoland today. 8:38 first pitch is ridiculous. It was 2am when that game ended.

I listened to a big portion of the game on the radio because I wasn't a fan of the FS1 team. Pete Rose, in particular, appears to hate the Cubs. Nice hair, Pete.

Tough loss in the bottom of the 13th inning, but even in defeat the Cubs did some pretty incredible things including Kris Bryant's homer to tie the game in the ninth. Very nervous about John Lackey tonight, but let's see what happens.

The Access Hollywood Tape

I'm not going to bother posting the video here. You've all seen it by now. I just have one comment about that tape. Trump said it was typical locker room banter, and there is an element of it that was, particularly when talking about the woman in the purple dress. However, the other part of the discussion, about what celebrities can get away with it, was not typical at all. Nobody talks about forcing themselves on women like that. They just don't.

That's probably why Billy Bush got suspended from the Today Show.

Donald didn't get suspended, of course, but his declaration last night that he never actually did it is going to blow up in his face. You know he did it (that's why he keeps Tic Tacs in his pocket), and you know those stories are going to start coming out now. He should have just thrown himself at the mercy of the country and shown even the tiniest bit of remorse for his words and actions. He didn't. He couldn't. It's not part of his DNA.

And it will be his undoing.

LATE UPDATE: It appears there will be more tapes coming out. It's just a matter of time.

Bobby Skafish at WLS

I spent Friday afternoon with Bobby Skafish at the brand new WLS studios in the NBC Tower. Talk about swanky...

Saw a few friends and former colleagues there, including Steve Dahl. Steve started the interview by noting that Bobby's book was published by former Steve & Garry producer Rick Kaempfer. After taking a little swipe at me ("He can do a whole book?"), he said maybe he should have gone with me as his publisher.

The Bobby interview was also a rekindling of a past relationship. The two men once worked just down the hall from each other (about twenty feet or so away), and a lot of the interviews mentioned in the book "We Have Company" were shared interviews. I often stood outside Bobby's studio when he had rock stars in there to corral them to appear on Steve & Garry's show immediately afterwards.

I thought Dag Juhlin in particular did a great job of interview prep for this. He read and enjoyed the book and had some great questions. Thanks again to the whole Steve Dahl crew for having Bobby on the show.

Steve and Bobby worked just down the hall from each other back in the day (when Steve & Garry were on the Loop AM and Bobby was on the Loop FM) doing the same time slot. My producer's booth was literally between them. Should be a fun interview. I'm tagging along to take photos. Haven't seen Steve in years. Looking forward to it.

Mocking Asians

The contemptible Jesse Waters (Bill O'Reilly's 'man on the street') contributed one of the most racist segments I've ever seen on Fox News. It contained every Asian stereotype you can imagine, and did it with the trademark humor (meaning "wouldn't know humor if it bit him on the tucchus") of Waters.

The VP Debate

I was at a board meeting for a local charity, so I missed the VP debate on Tuesday night. Turns out, so did about fifty million other people who watched the presidential debate. From TV Newser...

Tuesday night’s debate drew 37.16 million total viewers across nine networks, per early Nielsen data. 13.77 million watched on cable (Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, Fox Business), while 23.32 million watched on the English language broadcast nets (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and PBS). This is the lowest total for a VP debate since the 29 million who tuned into Cheney–Lieberman in 2000.

Nancy Reagan Would Vote for Hillary

Not Ron Reagan, Jr. That statement from him (an avowed liberal) would not be news.

The statement came from Michael Reagan, Ron's son from his first marriage--a die-hard conservative. Michael had previously endorsed Trump, but de-endorsed him on Monday because of the ridiculous charge that Hillary is not faithful to her husband.

The long-time conservative morning host of the biggest station in Milwaukee, WTMJ, is stepping down. Sykes has gotten famous nationally in the past year as a leader of the Never Trump movement. From Tom Taylor's column...

Charlie Sykes has recently wondered whether conservative talk radio “went from being the counterweight to creating our own alternative reality.” From his late-morning perch at Milwaukee’s news/talk WTMJ/620, he’s been one of the leading gatekeepers at talk radio, and now Charlie and employer Scripps announce he’ll leave at year-end. He says the decision “was not driven by this year’s political season.” He’s near the age that his father died at (63) and he says “I want to write more, travel more, and pursue new opportunities.” (He’s spent 23 years at ’TMJ.) Scripps Radio VP/Steve Wexler has “enjoyed working with Charlie since the early ’90s, and have always respected his smart, authentic approach to his show.” In the long Republican nominating campaign, Sykes has been a critic of Donald Trump, and he predicted on a recent NPR Morning Edition show that “there’s going to be a reckoning in conservative talk radio...The illusion that conservative media was about ideas has been shattered.” WTMJ’s sliding noon-3pm personality Jeff Wagner into Charlie’s 8:30am-noon slot, while searching for a new early-afternoon host. Woah. This is truly shocking Chicago radio news via Radio Insight...

Hubbard Classic Rock "97.1 The Drive" WDRV Chicago/96.9 WWDV Zion is bringing in Brian Sherman and Steve Tingle for mornings starting Monday, October 21.

Sherman & Tingle previously co-hosted afternoons and then mornings at Emmis' "Q101" WKQX until the station's sale to Merlin Media and flip to "FM News" in 2011. Sherman joins WDRV from mornings at Matrix Broadcasting Classic Rock "103.9 The Fox" WFXF Dundee IL, while Tingle was most recently at Entercom Hot AC "Star 94.1" WSTR Atlanta.

Sherman & Tingle will replace "The Morning Drive" hosted by Pete McMurray, Scott Miller, and Kathy Voltmer. Dan McNeil co-hosted with McMurray from March 2015 through June 2016.

Larz at Chicagoland Radio & Media has more information. According to Larz, Miller is out completely, Kathy will continue but only as the public affairs director, and McMurray remains under contract in an undisclosed role.

OCD Germans

This blog post by a Mexican living in Germany is pretty funny to me. I grew up around this, yet I was somehow not afflicted with the need to have my life be tidy and orderly in every way.

I'm a German freak, I suppose.

I'll be the MC for a German soccer banquet in a few weeks. It's the 60th anniversary of Green White Soccer Club--a club co-founded by my father. I asked a few of the old-timers what they wanted me to talk about as the MC, and they all said, "Keep it short. Nobody wants to hear you talk." Also..."No funny stuff."

Doesn't that sound like fun?

I'm thinking of explaining the club history through interpretive dance. I'm sure they'll love it.

46 years ago today, Janis died at the ridiculously young age of 27. She died in a motor lodge, in the wee hours of the morning after shooting heroin and buying a pack of Marlboros in the hotel lobby. Her body was found between the bed and the nightstand.

There's nothing glamorous about it. Don't do drugs, kids.

Earlier in the day she was working on the album Pearl. It was released after her death. This song was on that album. It was written by Kris Kristofferson...

Dick Enberg's Retirement

The Vin Scully retirement got a lot of pub, but another broadcasting great stepped down the other day too. Dick Enberg was one of the smoothest broadcasters of all-time.

I'll never forget that he was the man behind the microphone during the Bears Superbowl XX win.

He was also the play by play man for the San Diego Padres, and this was his final farewell.

Trump's Taxes

I know this will have no effect on his supporters, but wow, this revelation in his taxes from 1995 shows one thing beyond a shadow of a doubt.

He lost nearly a billion dollars on paper, but personally earned millions while stiffing the people who loaned money to him, the people who invested in him, the people who worked for him, and the United States government.

Or as Rudy Guliani called him on television yesterday: A genius.

Who Will Win the World Series?

Jason Stark of ESPN picks the Red Sox, which I think is a pretty solid pick. They look very strong.

He also surveyed the general managers in MLB and asked them who they thought would win it.

There's a lot of history going against the Cubs. The team with the best record hasn't won it this decade. They will be facing a team with a dominant ace (in the first round it will be either Madison Bumgardner or Noah Syndegaard). The best of five series is unforgiving and the best team often doesn't win. Even if they win the first series, they'll probably face Clayton Kershaw, another dominant ace. They haven't won it in 108 years and have a ton of pressure on them.

But...they are the best team in baseball. They are the team to beat. They are healthy and rested. They are managed by someone who knows how to keep them relaxed.

For the first time in my life it isn't crazy to believe the Cubs will in it all.

I have tickets for NLCS Game 7, a game that may or not ever happen. And I'll be watching or listening to the rest of the games just like anyone else. No lucky shirts. No praying. I realize that nothing I say, write or do will have any impact on whether or not they win.

So...I'm just going to try and enjoy it for once

USA Today Makes First Ever Presidential Endorsement

USA Today has been around for more than 30 years, and in that time they have never endorsed a presidential candidate. This year they felt they had no choice...

In the 34-year history of USA TODAY, the Editorial Board has never taken sides in the presidential race. Instead, we’ve expressed opinions about the major issues and haven’t presumed to tell our readers, who have a variety of priorities and values, which choice is best for them. Because every presidential race is different, we revisit our no-endorsement policy every four years. We’ve never seen reason to alter our approach. Until now.

This year, the choice isn’t between two capable major party nominees who happen to have significant ideological differences. This year, one of the candidates — Republican nominee Donald Trump — is, by unanimous consensus of the Editorial Board, unfit for the presidency.

This is such a "duh" statement, but I still applaud USA Today for making it. Every American in their heart and in their gut knows that Donald Trump shouldn't get anywhere near the White House. I've heard many rationalizations from my Republican friends, but I can see it in their eyes. They know the truth.

The Philippines

Don't know if you've been following the news in Asia, but the president of the Philippines has gone completely over the edge. From this morning's Washington Post...

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday compared his campaign to kill criminals to the Holocaust, saying he would like to "slaughter" millions of addicts just like Adolf hitler "massacred" millions of Jewish people.

"Hitler massacred three million Jews. Now, there are 3 million drug addicts. ... I'd be happy to slaughter them," he told reporters early Friday, according to GMA News.

"You know my victims, I would like to be, all criminals, to finish the problem of my country and save the next generation from perdition," he said.

Just so you know, Rodrigo, Hitler isn't considered a role model.

And we thought the leader of North Korea was nuts.

Who Won Debate?

CBS had a focus group of undecideds in Pennsylvania run by Republican pollster Frank Luntz. Clinton won big.

CNN had a focus group of undecideds in Florida. Clinton won big.

Politico did a poll of insider experts in all the swing states. 80% of them thought Hillary won big.

But at the Chicago Tribune, John Kass has clearly lost his mind. He thinks it was a great night for Trump.

Chicago shows you Cubs power – the power of having this special season on CBS-owned sports “Score” WSCR. The station jumps to fifth place overall, 4.0-3.7-4.5, and it’s second at night. Chris Huff digs way back for a higher share on the 670 frequency, and it was in the far-off diary days of Winter 1991, when 670 was WMAQ. There’s a tie at the #1 spot between CBS news WBBM (5.8-6.1-6.0) and iHeart’s urban AC “V103” WVAZ (5.6-6.0-6.0). ’BBM is #1 mornings and middays, while V103 is #1 afternoons, nights and weekends. Third total-week is Hubbard hot AC “Mix” WTMX (4.9-5.5-5.2, and second in mornings with Eric & Kathy). Fourth is iHeart’s top 40 “Kiss 103.5” WKSC (4.6-4.5-4.8). That’s its best topline since March 2012, and it’s second in afternoon drive. Hubbard’s classic rock “Drive” WDRV rises to its best number in exactly two years (3.6-3.6-3.8) – and it’s third, middays. Nice performance by Cumulus classic hits WLS-FM (3.2-3.0-3.6, and fourth in middays). The country competitors are within a tenth of a share – CBS’s recently-revamped “US 99” WUSN (3.0-2.9-3.8) versus iHeart’s “Big” WEBG (2.4-2.5-2.7). An off-book for Cumulus-managed/Emmis-owned alternative WKQX (2.8-2.6-2.3), and an up-book for easy oldies WRME. It’s up 1.8-2.0-2.3, heard on the audio of a low power Channel 6 TV station leased by Weigel. WRME beats CBS classic hits WJMK in middays. For the full week, WJMK has a nearly 2-to-1 lead over WRME in cume (about 1.325 million compared to about 705,000). Not-for-profit Window to the World operates classical WFMT as a commercial operation (it’s even got a “.com” website). WFMT’s up to its largest share since March 2012 (1.5-1.4-1.6). CHR “Kiss” holds the cume lead at about 2.6 million.

Bobby Skafish on WGN-TV

Bobby Skafish went over to the WGN-TV studios this morning on the day his book is officially released, and had a great conversation with Larry & Robin about some of the stories in "We Have Company: Four Decades of Rock and Roll Encounters".

Most people are a little nervous about doing a television interview like this, but Bobby was cool as a cucumber. He rolled with the discussion, and laid a few rock and roll stories on the morning crew.

After the interview, Bobby was asked to stay for another segment. Felt a little bit like the old days when Johnny Carson called the comedian over to the couch after his routine. Bobby played a part in a game to match rock and roll tattoos with mugshots.
