Media Notebook--8-4-23

MEDIA NOTEBOOK

A curation of news items about the media from this past week, with a particular emphasis on Chicago

(By Rick Kaempfer)

Happy to be back in the saddle.

RADIO/PODCASTS

*The 2023 inductees to the Radio Hall of Fame are

  • 102.9 WMGK Philadelphia morning host John DeBella
  • Longtime “The Big 98” WSIX Nashville morning host Gerry House
  • WNEW/WCBS-FM and SiriusXM host Pat St. John.
  • Former WAAF Boston, WIYY Baltimore, and KISW/KZOK Seattle morning host Bob Rivers.
  • American Top 40 host Shadoe Stevens
  • NPR correspondent Nina Totenberg.
  • WLIB/WBLS New York and Inner City Broadcasting executive Charles Warfield.
  • RadioInk publisher Deborah Parenti.

=Chicago is shut out this year, unfortunately.

=Quick story about one of the inductees, Bob Rivers. When he was in Baltimore back in 1988, he did that old “stay on the billboard until my team wins” stunt when the Orioles started the season off winless. One of my first jobs as Steve & Garry’s producer was to get a phone number for him so they could make fun of him.

*Illinois Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

=This month’s Illinois Entertainer is out and features my interview with Ron Romero from the Illinois Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. You can read it here.

*New boss at Hubbard

=While I was on my July hiatus, Hubbard Radio announced the appointment of Keith Lawless as VP/Market Manager for The Drive, the Mix, and WSHE. Lawless comes from Tampa where he had a 25-year run with Cox Media.

*All Access Shuts its Doors

=Another radio/media/music publication is going away. Joel Denver’s All Access is shutting down after 28 years on August 15th. It was purely a financial decision, as Denver said “the money just isn’t there anymore to continue.” These staffers are now available.

*Sportscaster-palooza

=When I was a kid I believed the Beatles all lived in the same house (like in the movie “Help”) and hung around with each other all the time. Turns out that wasn’t true, but you know what is true? All Chicago sportscasters live in the same house and hang out together. Here is the evidence. From left to right. Chuck Swirsky, Mike Monaco, Zach Zaidman, Adam Amin, Jason Benetti, Jon Wiedeman, Darrin Jackson and Jeff Joniak. I wonder where their house is. Looks like it’s near the river.

=Where was Pat Hughes? Oh, no big whoop, he was just being inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame.

=The Daily Herald interviewed fellow HOFer Bob Costas. He thinks that the late Cubs announcer Jack Quinlan should also be in the hall.

*Abe Kanan leaves Angi Taylor show

=Abe was a fixture on the Angi Taylor Show at 95.5 FM (Rock 95.5) for nearly three years as the co-host and executive producer of the show. The station and Kanan were unable to agree on a contract, which officially ended his time here. Kanan previously worked at Q-101 and the Loop.

*Lin Brehmer is a finalist for Personality of the Year

=Chicago may have been shut out of the Radio Hall of Fame this year but look who was nominated for the prestigious Marconi Award for Major Market Personality of the Year: the late great Lin Brehmer.

=August will be Lin Brehmer month in Chicago. You’ve probably heard about the tribute concert to Lin at the Metro, but did you know the Cubs are also joining in the celebration?

 *Cubs Song Emerges

=Speaking of the Cubs, check out this story in the Sun-Times about a recently discovered Cubs song from six decades ago.

*Chicago Radio Ratings

=It’s almost time for a new batch of ratings information, but in case you missed the June numbers while I was gone, you can find them here. Also, Jeff Agrest of the Sun-Times analyzed the battle of the sports radio outlets.

*Orion Samuelson Being Honored at McHenry County Fair

=The legendary broadcaster was on Lisa Dent's show on WGN this week discussing the honor.

*Johnny B

=Chicago loves Jonathon Brandmeier, and right now we’re rooting for him even more. Johnny announced another health scare involving his vocal cords.

=On the other hand, he sure sounds good. Score listeners were recently treated to a Johnny B appearance on the Parkins & Spiegel show.

*Dave Kerner Health Scare

=The recently retired radio reporter Dave Kerner also has been undergoing some pretty serious health issues these past two weeks. He updated his Facebook friends with this report…

Three days after coming home following the placement of two stents in my heart, I experienced some pain on my right side (near rib cage) to the point of not being able to lie down and sleep.Toughed it out until Monday when I called doctors and they arranged a late Monday afternoon scan. Four hours after the scan, my cardiologist calls me and says he’s concerned enough I should go back to hospital ER. Another two day stay, more tests and the result of a small blood clot and a small amount of fluid in a lung, both treatable without surgery. I’m back home again. Medical people watching my back. And more that has happened to me and my health in the last 11 days than the other 65-plus years put together. But again, VERY GRATEFUL.

*Cisco Cotto’s new gig

=He’ll still be working at WBBM-AM, but...

*U of C radio station facing trouble

=U of Chicago’s student run radio station has had its budget slashed, and the students and alumni fear for the station’s future. Block Club Chicago has the details.

*Ex-Chicago Radio

=Remember Don Geronimo? The former B-96 and WLS personality has been in Washington DC at WBIG-FM for years now, but this week they showed him the door after an on-air incident involving sexist comments toward a local Washington TV anchor. Details are here.

=Don’s apology was posted yesterday. It’s too late to save him, but it’s still the right thing to do.

=Brad White attended the Illinois Center of Broadcasting and got his career start as a board op at WLIT. Well, talk about working your way up the ladder! Last week iHeartMedia announced that Brad has been named as the Program Director of one of America’s most respected rock stations, KBCO in Boulder-Denver. He has been working at the station and its Denver sister stations since 2003.

*Rest in Peace

We lost a few local legends over the past month. All of them are big losses…

=Dick Biondi was one of the all-time greats.

=Tom Teuber was a legendary programmer, especially during his time here in Chicago at WMET.

=Charlie Warner was the man who brought Bob Pittman to Chicago when he ran WKQX. This list by Inside Radio mentions some of the others who were mentored by Charlie. Not on the list are some of the people he hired in Chicago, including Mitch Michaels, Lorna Ozmon, and Bob Heymann.

=Frank Cody was the father of the Smooth Jazz format.

MEDIA BIRTHDAYS & MILESTONES

*August 1—Joe Collins death

=It would be difficult to find someone more universally loved than former Chicago traffic reporter Joe Collins. I had the chance to interview him for Illinois Entertainer just a few months before he passed away.

*August 3—Scott Placko birthday

=Channel 2 cameraman/photographer Scott is the younger brother of Fox-32 reporter Dane.

August 3--Jerry G. Bishop birthday

=The anniversary of Chicago broadcasting icon Jerry G. Bishop’s birth was this week. His protégé (as both Svengoolie and in radio) was Rich Koz. When I interviewed Koz in 2009, he went into a little more detail about what Jerry G. meant to him. Worth a read.

*August 4, 1957—Robin Robinson birthday

=For many years Robin anchored the marquee newscast at Fox-32. She retired a few years ago after a distinguished career.

*August 4—Phil Manicki birthday

=Former Loop/Drive jock was a fixture of rock radio in Chicago for decades. My 2019 Illinois Entertainer interview with Phil is here.

*August 5—Geoff Pinkus birthday

Geoff is a former WIND/WCKG talker. My 2008 Chicago Radio Spotlight interview with Geoff is here.

TV/STREAMING

*New Role for Sarah Jindra at WGN-TV

=Today was her last day as a traffic reporter on WGN-TV. She begins a new role as the co-host of a new show called Spotlight Chicago in September. (It was air at 3pm on WGN-TV). This is a look back at her traffic reporting career.

*No end in sight for writers/actors strike

=What does our media consumption future hold? The New York Times took a crack at answering the question we’ve all been wondering about.

*Cable News Corner

=Kirstin Powers Exits CNN

=Ray Epps Sues Fox News

*Dick Vitale has Vocal-Cord Cancer

=The basketball announcing icon shared the bad news with his fans a few weeks ago. ABC-7 has the story.

*Mark Jackson out at ESPN

=You’ve probably heard about the many layoffs at ESPN over the past few weeks. The NBA crew in particular has been shaken up. Jeff Van Gundy was shoved out recently. This week they said farewell to Mark Jackson.

*Vanna White signs partial deal

=When I signed off at the end of June, Vanna was in a holdout with Wheel of Fortune, trying to secure a raise. She got part of what she wanted. If you read between the lines, it doesn’t sound like she’ll get all of it.

*Rest in Peace

We lost a few greats in the television/film world as well.

=Paul Reubens/Pee Wee Herman was 70.

=You may not know the name Jack Reed, but you’ve seen famous actors portray him.

=Katie Spikes

SOCIAL MEDIA

*Twitter is gone

One person who didn’t go on a hiatus in July was Elon Musk. He’s been in the news constantly.

=Elon Musk changes Twitter name and logo

=Elon Musk sued for blowing off severance for workers

=Elon Musk sues not-for-profit that tracks hate speech

I've been working on an exciting book and will have details about that book in the coming weeks. My podcasts and regular blog features will return next week.

As usual, if you have any media news you'd like to share, drop me a line at rick@eckhartzpress.com.

Media Notebook--5-12-23

MEDIA NOTEBOOK

A curation of news items about the media from this past week, with a particular emphasis on Chicago

(By Rick Kaempfer)

RADIO/PODCASTS

*Dave Kerner retires

=The WBBM-AM veteran logged a solid 43 years to his career. He announced the news on his Facebook page this week…

*Suspect Arrested in New Orleans Shooting

=This is a media story because this is the shooting that WXRT disc jockey Terri Hemmert witnessed in New Orleans. The Chicago Tribune has the full story.

*Mitch Rosen/Ryan Porth Promotions

=Jeff Agrest of the Sun Times reported that Mitch Rosen was promoted to VP/Brand Manager at the Score, and Ryan Porth, who came to the Score in 2022 from Nashville, is now going to take over the day-to-day responsibilities of running the station.

*RIP Mike Fowler

=Sad news to report. Former Rock 103.5 GM/Oldies 104.3 WJMK GM/ESPN sales manager Mike Fowler passed away over the weekend in Atlanta. He moved down to Atlanta in 2015 as the Audacy market manager there. Last year his family announced that Mike was suffering from ALS. Deepest condolences to his family: Pam, Jack and Emily.

*More Info on WLS anniversary

=Last week I posted a piece about the history of WLS, and the anniversary of it becoming a rock (Top-40) station. I heard from long-time WGNer Max Armstrong who told me more about that anniversary. I thought this was fascinating. From Max…”Rick, I was in the Prairie Farmer Magazine archives this week, and it was interesting to see how they treated the switch at WLS 63 years ago. And this was the week that paved the way for my long-time colleague Orion Samuelson. Within four months Ward Quaal had brought Orion down to WGN from WBAY in Green Bay to win over the farmers (and their advertisers) lost in the WLS conversion.”

*AI-Generated DJs Hit the Airwaves

=Figures. May I offer my “NO” vote on this development?

*Julie Chronis joins the Rock 95.5 lineup

=Julie is a traffic reporter for iHeart, but recently added another duty. She holds down the rock and roll fort on Saturdays at 95.5 FM from 11am-4pm.

*Eddie V & Hannah B

=Congrats to the Star Network radio duo on their one-year anniversary.

*Ex-Chicago Radio Update

=Bart Shore, one of the most notable traffic reporters in Chicago radio history, moved to North Carolina last year, but he has managed to keep a toe in the broadcasting waters in Brevard, NC on WSQL AM & FM. This is how Bart described it to me: “It is only fill in work as needed, but it allows me to still be mostly retired and come into the station and play the kind of music I love- they let me do whatever I want- (they also air my Zecom and Time Warp Radio Show and Song of the Day)”

=Jim Johnson update. His daughter Alexis Del Cid has been updating everyone about her father’s struggle with Alzheimer’s. It’s obviously a difficult situation, but Alexis’ stories are often heartwarming. This one is a good example of it.

=John Dempsey, former WLS newsman, seems to be enjoying his retirement. He was in Ireland this week attending a Bruce Springsteen concert.

*The Loop Files

=It posts every Tuesday. This week I featured Garry Meier.

MEDIA BIRTHDAYS/MILESTONES

*May 7—John “Swany” Swanson birthday

=Swany is the dean of Chicago radio producers. He got his start as a technical producer for Jonathon Brandmeier, but later produced shows by Steve Cochran and Kevin Matthews, and most famously was the executive producer of the long-running Eric and Kathy Show. He still produces the show that emerged from that, the Mix Morning Show. (And, oh yeah, he also co-wrote The Radio Producer’s Handbook with me).

*May 7—Dina Bair birthday

=Dina has been with WGN-TV since the mid-90s. She currently co-hosts the WGN Midday News and serves as the station’s medical reporter.

*May 10—Andy Masur birthday

=WGN Radio sportscaster Andy Masur has been part of the Chicago Cubs broadcasts (I interviewed him about that in 2010), part of the Chicago White Sox broadcasts (I interviewed him about that in 2020), and part of the San Diego Padres broadcasts. He also writes for Barrett Sports Media.

*May 11—Larry Hawley birthday

=Larry is a reporter and producer for WGNTV.com, concentrating mostly on sports.

*May 12—George Carlin birthday

=The brilliant comedian would have been 86 years old this week. Sadly, he passed away a long time ago. Shortly before his death, I wrote about my brush with Carlin. The article was written in 2007. It takes place in 2001.

*May 13—Ben Ponzio birthday

=Ben was a professional poker player for a while, but his day job has always been radio salesman. Right now he’s the General Sales Manager for Audacy in Chicago.

*May 13—Jim Baumann birthday

=Baumann is the executive editor of The Daily Herald. Last year he also penned a book that collected examples of his popular Grammar Moses column. It’s really quite good, and I don’t just say that because I published it.

*May 13—Mark Giangreco birthday

=The long-time Chicago sportscaster (WMAQ-TV, WLS-TV, ESPN Radio) is no longer on the air in Chicago, but he’s a great follow on Twitter. I was lucky enough to interview him a few times, including once on my podcast, and once for Shore Magazine.

TV/STREAMING

*Chicago Tonight Goes Back to Earlier Timeslot

=WTTW moved the show up against the other 10pm newscasts late last year. Well, now they are moving it to 5:30pm, with a re-broadcast at 10:00pm. The station says they may still go live at 10pm on days when there is a particularly compelling breaking news story.

*Chicago Headline Club’s Lifetime Achievement Awards

=No one knows for sure who will win the Lisagor Awards handed out at the ceremony tonight, but we do know who is getting recognized with Lifetime Achievement Awards. The prestigious foursome is Dorothy Tucker, Phil Ponce, Rick Pearson, and Chuck Neubauer. There’s more about all four of them here. Best wishes to all the Lisagor nominees tonight, too.

*The NATAS Silver Circle Inductees

=It’s the second Friday in a row for media awards in Chicago. Last Friday NATAS inducted new members into the Silver Circle. Among the inductees, Josea Sanders from ABC-7.

=Channel 2 photographer/editor Mike Klingele was inducted by Dave Savini

=NBC-5’s Andy Avalos was introduced by Alex Maragos.

=Also inducted this year, Marlaine Selip, Jay Shefsky, Gail Sikevitz, and posthumous inductees were Vince Lloyd, Bill Hamilton and Donald Farnham. Read more about the awards and the inductees at the Chicago Emmy Online website.

=If you missed it, the entire ceremony will be aired on WCIU-TV on May 21st from 1-2:30pm.

*Fill a Bag, Fill a Bus

=The Steve Wilkos show on CW26 is doing a food drive to help end hunger. On May 17th, they'll be collecting non-perishable food items at the Jewel Osco on 103rd Street in Oak Lawn from 3-8pm. On May 18th, they'll be at Jewel Osco at 7525 W. Lake Street in River Forest from 3-8pm.

*RIP Newton Minow

=The former FCC Chairman who famously declared television “a vast wasteland” (and that was 60 years ago), passed away this week at the age of 97. He was a champion of public television, a Peabody winner, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.

*Hoover logs 20 years at WGN

=WGN-TV Morning News producer Jeff Hoover showed off his traditional “20-year money clip” on Facebook. Pretty fancy…

*MTV News Shuts Down

=There was a time when MTV News was a very influential part of the music media. Granted, that time was decades ago, but it was still a surprise to read the news this week of it’s ultimate demise. The Washington Post has the story.

*Cable News Corner

=Trump’s CNN Town Hall Turns into a Trump Rally. Tom Jones at Poynter has a pretty scathing criticism of CNN in his Poynter column.

=Fox isn’t in the apology business, and that could cost them tons of money. NPR reports.

=Tucker Carlson ready to torch Fox News. So says Axios.

*Mark Harper Enjoying Retirement

=The local NW Side newspaper The Sounds featured a piece about 11-time Emmy Winner Mark Harper this week. The article was written by his wife, former B-96 newscaster Karen Hand. I can’t link to it because it isn’t on-line, but this photo of the article is pretty easy to read.

*Writers Strike May Last for Months

=I’m not optimistic after reading this piece in the New York Times

*ESPN Leading Candidate to Sign Pat MacAfee

=The former NFL punter turned podcast star signed a $120 million deal with Fan Duel, but according to this piece in the New York Post, he’s thinking of walking away from that deal, and ESPN is hovering.

*Chicago, Movie Capital of America…at least for one night

=The stars of Sebastian Maniscalco’s new movie were in town over the weekend for the movie premiere. Rick Gieser was there.

PRINT/DIGITAL MEDIA

*Pulitzer Prize Winners Announced

=Tuesday was the biggest day of the journalism year, the day the Pulitzer Prize winners were announced. Check out the full list here. Among the winners, a father-son team in Alabama. Seriously.

*Puck Co-Founder and CEO Leaving Company

=It’s odd that Axios reported this before Puck did, but that’s what happened this week. Puck CEO Joe Purzycky sent a note to the staff saying he was leaving the company, and Axios obtained a copy of it.

SOCIAL MEDIA

*Elon Musk Hires Mystery Woman as Twitter CEO

=Who is this woman?

=The Wall Street Journal speculates the mystery woman is NBC-Universal's Linda Yaccarino.

*Tucker Carlson to Re-Launch Show on Twitter

=He released a video saying he would do it. Variety reported on the news. But there are few things to keep in mind here. First of all, the announcement was very vague. No timetables were given. And there are a lot of legal hurdles that still need to be cleared.

As always, if you have any media story you’d like to share or think that I might be interested in sharing, drop me a line at rick@eckhartzpress.com or amishrick@yahoo.com. If you're in Chicago media and wondering why I didn't mention your birthday, it's probably because I don't know it. Drop me a line and let me know and I'll put you on my calendar.
