Media Notebook--3-22-24

MEDIA NOTEBOOK

A curation of news items about the media from this past week, with a particular emphasis on Chicago.

RADIO/PODCASTS

*Chicago Radio Ratings

=The February ratings are out, and here are the top ten stations in Chicago (M-Sun, 6A-Midnight, 6+)

WLIT (6.7)

WDRV (6.6)

WBBM-AM (5.4)

WVAZ (5.1)

WXRT (5.0)

WOJO (4.6)

WUSN (3.8)

WGN (3.5)

WLS-FM (3.5)

WSCR (3.1)

=Huge numbers for The Drive. They had the biggest leap of the month (+0.8). Ironically, those numbers are pre-changes. Should be interesting to see if the changes they made to the airstaff impact their numbers next month. Also, a great month for WGN (+0.4) and US-99 (+0.3).

=Me-TV FM also had their best month in a while. The new Me-TV FM program director Phil Manicki will be my next feature in Illinois Entertainer (the upcoming April issue).

=The biggest drop was at WBBM-AM (-0.8).

*Lolla Lineup

=Pretty strong this year. The Killers, SZA, Tyler, The Creator, and Blink 182 are among the headliners. Full list is here, courtesy of Billboard.

*John Landecker Tribute on Rewound Radio

=Rewound Radio is featuring John Records Landecker this weekend and next to pay tribute to the National Radio Hall of Famer for his birthday (March 28). Details are here.

*Audacy bankruptcy

=Audacy has filed their bankruptcy and divestiture plan withthe FCC.

*Howard Stern Returns to Terrestrial Radio

=For one day, anyway. First time since 2014. He appeared on Jim Kerr’s 50th anniversary show in New York.

 *Orion Approaching 90

=He’ll hit the big 9-0 on Easter Sunday.

*Podcast Corner

=From the “Everybody has a podcast” department, add the names LeBron James and JJ Reddick. I hope they don’t go by Ebony & Ivory.

=A Russian spy tells how she plied her trade in this new podcast.

*Ex-Chicago Radio

=Former WLUPer Vinny Marino lands a new gig. He is Operations Manager and PD in Rutland, VT.

=Former US99 night jock Kimmie Caruba has lost her morning show gig at WUBL in Atlanta.

=Former WXLC/Waukegan morning co-host Wes McCane has been added to the morning show at KSTP in Minneapolis. The show is now called The Crisco, Dez, and Wes Morning Show.

=Eric Clapton’s Love Letters to Pattie Boyd (while she was married to George Harrison) are up for auction.

MEDIA BIRTHDAYS/MILESTONES

*March 18—Rich King birthday

=Rich King had a nearly 50-year career in Chicago media, including stints at WGN Radio, WBBM Radio, WBBM-TV and WGN-TV. He wrote a best-selling book about his wife called My Maggie, and in 2022 wrote a memoir about his time working with WGN photographer Richard “Ike” Isaac (photo below) called Ike and Me, which was nominated for Book of the Year by the Chicago Writers Association.

*March 18—Len O’Kelly birthday

=Len worked on the air and off at several radio stations in Chicago, including WJMK-FM. He is now a professor at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, training the next generation of broadcasters. I interviewed him about that for Illinois Entertainer in 2017.

*March 19, 1928—Amos & Andy debuts on network radio (NBC Blue Network/WMAQ Chicago)

=When you hear it now, it’s shockingly racist. But when it debuted on NBC this week in 1928 (live from Chicago), it was one of the most popular shows in the country. The show began in 1926 as “Sam and Henry” on WGN radio, which described it as a “colored comedy serial.” Blackface Minstrel shows were the biggest Vaudeville draws, and this was the radio version of that. When NBC wanted to air it nationwide, WGN refused to let them take the name Sam & Henry along with them. The show was renamed Amos & Andy, and within a year it was a nationwide six-night a week hit, airing at 7PM Eastern time. It was rebroadcast on the West Coast in the same time slot; the first show to ever rate that kind of importance. Chicago was suddenly the center of the American media universe–and became home to dozens of national hit radio shows. None of them, however, were as popular as the number one show in the country, Amos & Andy.

*March 19, 1965—Jack Quinlan dies in car crash.

=Quinlan was the radio play-by-play man for the Cubs from 1955-1964, the first announcer to say the names Ron Santo, Billy Williams, Lou Brock and more. (He shared the booth with Lou Boudreau and Charlie Grimm). The car accident happened during spring training in 1965. Quinlan was only 38 years old.

*March 19, 1977—Final episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show

=It was the end of an era. Who could ever forget that last hug?

*March 19, 1989—Steve Dahl’s on-air vasectomy

=The first-ever live on-air vasectomy aired on this day in 1989 on AM 1000. Dahl was put under local anesthesia, and Garry Meier described the procedure on the radio along with Steve’s doctor, while Steve begged everyone to stop laughing while performing such a delicate task. Hard to describe how hilarious it was. It appears on Steve & Garry’s Decade of Service.

*March 20--Mitch Michaels birthday

=Mitch is a legendary rock jock in Chicago, with stints at virtually every rock station including WXRT, Q-101, the Loop, WCKG, and the River. In 2017, he wrote a memoir (with Ken Churilla) about his career called Doin the Cruise. I interviewed Mitch in 2009 for Chicago Radio Spotlight, and then interviewed him again in 2015 for Illinois Entertainer.

*March 21—Randy Dry birthday

=Randy worked briefly in Chicago radio as a producer for the Steve & Garry show before going on to become a record company executive. He contributed to the book The Loop Files.

*March 21, 1970—The Agony of Defeat

=The man who crashed on the ski jump was named Vinko Bogataj. For the rest of the 70s, we would call him the “Agony of Defeat” because of his starring role in the opening sequence of Wild World of Sports.

*March 21, 1980—Who Shot J.R?

=On the season finale of Dallas, this week in 1980, a mystery character shot J.R. Ewing. For the entire summer America speculated who it was. It wasn’t revealed until November. Hard to imagine a show capturing the attention of the entire nation like that these days.

*March 21, 2006—Twitter is founded

=Twitter is such a big part of our world it’s hard to remember that it hasn’t been around that long. As of this week, it’s only 18 years.

*March 22—Bob Costas birthday

=Costas is one of the most respected names in sports broadcasting, host of 12 Olympics Games and winner of 28 Emmy Awards. He’s also in the Baseball Hall of Fame (as a Ford Frick Award winner) and was at the microphone for NBC calling Ryne Sandberg’s greatest game in 1984. But before all of that great glory, Costas worked in Chicago as the play-by-play man for the Chicago Bulls on WGN-TV during the 1979-1980 season. (Photo: WGN-TV)

TV/STREAMING

*Stacey King Duped by Fake Twitter Announcement

=It happened on a recent Bulls broadcast. Turns out Derrick Rose didn’t retire, despite the post on X (Twitter) claiming he did.

*Ian Eagle Takes Over for Jim Nantz

=The new primary announcer for the NCAA tournament is being paired with Bill Rafferty.

*SNL 1975

=Coming soon, a dramatized version of the beginning of SNL, leading up to the first episode in 1975. Esquire has some preview info and pics.

*Cable News Corner

=Steve Doocey: The Unexpected Voice of Dissent at Fox News

*Trump Sues ABC for Defamation

=He is suing because George Stephanopoulos said “Judges and two juries have found him guilty of rape and defaming the victim of that rape.”  Trump says it was only sexual assault, not rape, even though the judge did explicitly rule that describing it as rape was “still substantially true.”  Good luck winning that one.

*Rest in Peace

=David Seidler

Oscar-winning writer of The King’s Speech.

=M. Emmet Walsh

The character actor (Blood Simple, Blade Runner) was 88.

PRINT/DIGITAL

*Gannett and McClatchy are dropping the AP

=This is a shocking development. We’re talking about 230+ newspapers nationwide. Details are here, via Poynter.

*Prince Harry’s Lawyers Go After Rupert Murdoch

=This is all about the phone hacking controversy involving newspapers in Britain. The AP has the latest details. (Take that Gannett & McClatchy)

*Sports Illustrated Will Continue Operations Under New Publisher

=Someone grabbed the defibrillator and put it on Sports Illustrated’s chest. Turns out, SI is not dead yet.

=Who is Minute Media, and can they really save SI?

*How American News Lost its Nerve

=The subtitle says it all: Very few have balls. This is the take of Max Tani from Semafor.

 *Rest In Peace

=Dave Van Dyck

I missed this news a few months ago. The former Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times sports reporter was 76. He had retired to Florida.

SOCIAL MEDIA

*Reddit is a Content-Moderation Success Story

=At one time Reddit was the place to find communities peddling revenge porn, violence, and racial animus. After installing robust content moderation, they have become a trusted news source, and went public with an IPO. The story of that journey is told in the New York Times.

=The first day of trading, shares rose 48%.

*Don Lemon’s Elon Musk Interview

=Lemon released it this week. Here area few takeaways from the interview. To me, this moment made the hair stand up on my neck a bit. Sounds like something a mafia don would say…

When Lemon suggested that the companies’ suspension of their advertising was a form of free speech, and that Musk might bear responsibility if X fails, he grew frustrated.

“You said, ‘If they kill the company, it’s them,’ but doesn’t the buck stop with you?” Lemon asked.

Musk appeared rattled.

“Don, I have to say, choose your questions carefully,” he responded.

As always, if you have any media story you’d like to share or think that I might be interested in sharing, drop me a line at rick@eckhartzpress.com or amishrick@yahoo.com. If you're in Chicago media and wondering why I didn't mention your birthday, it's probably because I don't know it. Drop me a line and let me know and I'll put you on my calendar.

Media Notebook--8-4-23

MEDIA NOTEBOOK

A curation of news items about the media from this past week, with a particular emphasis on Chicago

(By Rick Kaempfer)

Happy to be back in the saddle.

RADIO/PODCASTS

*The 2023 inductees to the Radio Hall of Fame are…

  • 102.9 WMGK Philadelphia morning host John DeBella
  • Longtime “The Big 98” WSIX Nashville morning host Gerry House
  • WNEW/WCBS-FM and SiriusXM host Pat St. John.
  • Former WAAF Boston, WIYY Baltimore, and KISW/KZOK Seattle morning host Bob Rivers.
  • American Top 40 host Shadoe Stevens
  • NPR correspondent Nina Totenberg.
  • WLIB/WBLS New York and Inner City Broadcasting executive Charles Warfield.
  • RadioInk publisher Deborah Parenti.

=Chicago is shut out this year, unfortunately.

=Quick story about one of the inductees, Bob Rivers. When he was in Baltimore back in 1988, he did that old “stay on the billboard until my team wins” stunt when the Orioles started the season off winless. One of my first jobs as Steve & Garry’s producer was to get a phone number for him so they could make fun of him.

*Illinois Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

=This month’s Illinois Entertainer is out and features my interview with Ron Romero from the Illinois Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. You can read it here.

*New boss at Hubbard

=While I was on my July hiatus, Hubbard Radio announced the appointment of Keith Lawless as VP/Market Manager for The Drive, the Mix, and WSHE. Lawless comes from Tampa where he had a 25-year run with Cox Media.

*All Access Shuts its Doors

=Another radio/media/music publication is going away. Joel Denver’s All Access is shutting down after 28 years on August 15th. It was purely a financial decision, as Denver said “the money just isn’t there anymore to continue.” These staffers are now available.

*Sportscaster-palooza

=When I was a kid I believed the Beatles all lived in the same house (like in the movie “Help”) and hung around with each other all the time. Turns out that wasn’t true, but you know what is true? All Chicago sportscasters live in the same house and hang out together. Here is the evidence. From left to right. Chuck Swirsky, Mike Monaco, Zach Zaidman, Adam Amin, Jason Benetti, Jon Wiedeman, Darrin Jackson and Jeff Joniak. I wonder where their house is. Looks like it’s near the river.

=Where was Pat Hughes? Oh, no big whoop, he was just being inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame.

=The Daily Herald interviewed fellow HOFer Bob Costas. He thinks that the late Cubs announcer Jack Quinlan should also be in the hall.

*Abe Kanan leaves Angi Taylor show

=Abe was a fixture on the Angi Taylor Show at 95.5 FM (Rock 95.5) for nearly three years as the co-host and executive producer of the show. The station and Kanan were unable to agree on a contract, which officially ended his time here. Kanan previously worked at Q-101 and the Loop.

*Lin Brehmer is a finalist for Personality of the Year

=Chicago may have been shut out of the Radio Hall of Fame this year but look who was nominated for the prestigious Marconi Award for Major Market Personality of the Year: the late great Lin Brehmer.

=August will be Lin Brehmer month in Chicago. You’ve probably heard about the tribute concert to Lin at the Metro, but did you know the Cubs are also joining in the celebration?

 *Cubs Song Emerges

=Speaking of the Cubs, check out this story in the Sun-Times about a recently discovered Cubs song from six decades ago.

*Chicago Radio Ratings

=It’s almost time for a new batch of ratings information, but in case you missed the June numbers while I was gone, you can find them here. Also, Jeff Agrest of the Sun-Times analyzed the battle of the sports radio outlets.

*Orion Samuelson Being Honored at McHenry County Fair

=The legendary broadcaster was on Lisa Dent's show on WGN this week discussing the honor.

*Johnny B

=Chicago loves Jonathon Brandmeier, and right now we’re rooting for him even more. Johnny announced another health scare involving his vocal cords.

=On the other hand, he sure sounds good. Score listeners were recently treated to a Johnny B appearance on the Parkins & Spiegel show.

*Dave Kerner Health Scare

=The recently retired radio reporter Dave Kerner also has been undergoing some pretty serious health issues these past two weeks. He updated his Facebook friends with this report…

Three days after coming home following the placement of two stents in my heart, I experienced some pain on my right side (near rib cage) to the point of not being able to lie down and sleep.Toughed it out until Monday when I called doctors and they arranged a late Monday afternoon scan. Four hours after the scan, my cardiologist calls me and says he’s concerned enough I should go back to hospital ER. Another two day stay, more tests and the result of a small blood clot and a small amount of fluid in a lung, both treatable without surgery. I’m back home again. Medical people watching my back. And more that has happened to me and my health in the last 11 days than the other 65-plus years put together. But again, VERY GRATEFUL.

*Cisco Cotto’s new gig

=He’ll still be working at WBBM-AM, but...

*U of C radio station facing trouble

=U of Chicago’s student run radio station has had its budget slashed, and the students and alumni fear for the station’s future. Block Club Chicago has the details.

*Ex-Chicago Radio

=Remember Don Geronimo? The former B-96 and WLS personality has been in Washington DC at WBIG-FM for years now, but this week they showed him the door after an on-air incident involving sexist comments toward a local Washington TV anchor. Details are here.

=Don’s apology was posted yesterday. It’s too late to save him, but it’s still the right thing to do.

=Brad White attended the Illinois Center of Broadcasting and got his career start as a board op at WLIT. Well, talk about working your way up the ladder! Last week iHeartMedia announced that Brad has been named as the Program Director of one of America’s most respected rock stations, KBCO in Boulder-Denver. He has been working at the station and its Denver sister stations since 2003.

*Rest in Peace

We lost a few local legends over the past month. All of them are big losses…

=Dick Biondi was one of the all-time greats.

=Tom Teuber was a legendary programmer, especially during his time here in Chicago at WMET.

=Charlie Warner was the man who brought Bob Pittman to Chicago when he ran WKQX. This list by Inside Radio mentions some of the others who were mentored by Charlie. Not on the list are some of the people he hired in Chicago, including Mitch Michaels, Lorna Ozmon, and Bob Heymann.

=Frank Cody was the father of the Smooth Jazz format.

MEDIA BIRTHDAYS & MILESTONES

*August 1—Joe Collins death

=It would be difficult to find someone more universally loved than former Chicago traffic reporter Joe Collins. I had the chance to interview him for Illinois Entertainer just a few months before he passed away.

*August 3—Scott Placko birthday

=Channel 2 cameraman/photographer Scott is the younger brother of Fox-32 reporter Dane.

August 3--Jerry G. Bishop birthday

=The anniversary of Chicago broadcasting icon Jerry G. Bishop’s birth was this week. His protégé (as both Svengoolie and in radio) was Rich Koz. When I interviewed Koz in 2009, he went into a little more detail about what Jerry G. meant to him. Worth a read.

*August 4, 1957—Robin Robinson birthday

=For many years Robin anchored the marquee newscast at Fox-32. She retired a few years ago after a distinguished career.

*August 4—Phil Manicki birthday

=Former Loop/Drive jock was a fixture of rock radio in Chicago for decades. My 2019 Illinois Entertainer interview with Phil is here.

*August 5—Geoff Pinkus birthday

Geoff is a former WIND/WCKG talker. My 2008 Chicago Radio Spotlight interview with Geoff is here.

TV/STREAMING

*New Role for Sarah Jindra at WGN-TV

=Today was her last day as a traffic reporter on WGN-TV. She begins a new role as the co-host of a new show called Spotlight Chicago in September. (It was air at 3pm on WGN-TV). This is a look back at her traffic reporting career.

*No end in sight for writers/actors strike

=What does our media consumption future hold? The New York Times took a crack at answering the question we’ve all been wondering about.

*Cable News Corner

=Kirstin Powers Exits CNN

=Ray Epps Sues Fox News

*Dick Vitale has Vocal-Cord Cancer

=The basketball announcing icon shared the bad news with his fans a few weeks ago. ABC-7 has the story.

*Mark Jackson out at ESPN

=You’ve probably heard about the many layoffs at ESPN over the past few weeks. The NBA crew in particular has been shaken up. Jeff Van Gundy was shoved out recently. This week they said farewell to Mark Jackson.

*Vanna White signs partial deal

=When I signed off at the end of June, Vanna was in a holdout with Wheel of Fortune, trying to secure a raise. She got part of what she wanted. If you read between the lines, it doesn’t sound like she’ll get all of it.

*Rest in Peace

We lost a few greats in the television/film world as well.

=Paul Reubens/Pee Wee Herman was 70.

=You may not know the name Jack Reed, but you’ve seen famous actors portray him.

=Katie Spikes

SOCIAL MEDIA

*Twitter is gone

One person who didn’t go on a hiatus in July was Elon Musk. He’s been in the news constantly.

=Elon Musk changes Twitter name and logo

=Elon Musk sued for blowing off severance for workers

=Elon Musk sues not-for-profit that tracks hate speech

I've been working on an exciting book and will have details about that book in the coming weeks. My podcasts and regular blog features will return next week.

As usual, if you have any media news you'd like to share, drop me a line at rick@eckhartzpress.com.
