Publishing Portal--July 30, 2024

The latest news from Eckhartz Press, and a chance to peek into some of the great previous offerings from our humble little publishing company.

Happy Birthday!

=Eckhartz Press co-founder and one of our most prolific authors, Rick Kaempfer, is celebrating a birthday this week (July 28). Rick has written Father Knows Nothing, $everance, Back in the DDRThe Loop Files, and EveryCubEver for us, and co-written The Living Wills, Records Truly Is My Middle Name and Grun Weiss Vor.

=On the tenth anniversary of $everance's release (August 1, 2017), Rick updated the "Who Owns What in the Media" section at the back of the book. Here's radio. Here's the rest of traditional media. Time for another update soon.

=This week in 2019 (August 2), Rick made a few appearances promoting EveryCubEver. First he did a morning show in Elgin, then in the evening he did an appearance at Club 400 in Lake in the Hills and met former Cubs reliever Pedro Strop.

Happy Birthday!

=Another Eckhartz author is celebrating a birthday this week (July 29). Happy birthday to Mob Adjacent co-author Mike Gentile. Mike is the older of the Gentile brothers, and the one who really sounds authentically Mob-Adjacent. Jeffrey is the more urbane of the brothers.

First Copy of the Book

One of the most rewarding days in publishing is the day the author gets his or her first copy of their book. To Nudge the World's Jim Slusher had that moment last week. So what did he do with his first copy? Naturally, he gave it to his mom. That's her in the photo below...

Surviving Sue

=Tonight's the night...

To The Men I've Loved

=Author Pat Motto is having the launch party for her brand new Eckhartz Press book To the Men I've Loved in just a few weeks. Mark your calendars.

Last Comiskey

=Our book Last Comiskey is actually the companion piece to the documentary film Last Comiskey by Matt Flesch. Matt came to the book's launch party. In a few weeks (August 22) he'll be doing a mini-screening of the film at the Arlington Heights Public Library. (You can register here). It will also include a Q&A with former White Sox pitcher Don Pall. Get your books signed by Matt & Don, by ordering them from us before the event, and bringing them that night.

Close Encounters of a Chicago Kind

=Vicki Quade is the author of our book Close Encounters of a Chicago Kind, but she is even more well known as a playwright and stage performer. She has three big shows coming up this fall, and sent word that tickets are available. Great fun, especially for Catholics. A Reluctant Immigrant

=This week in 2013, we lost one of our authors, Felizitas Sudendorf. Her book about her courageous immigration to America was a big early hit for us. It was the only book we ever released on our imprint, Helgard Press. She combined war stories with old German recipes. It was a revelation. When she passed away, Rick wrote this tribute to her. We have since lost a few other authors including Chet Coppock, Joel Daly, Pat Colander, Dena Mendes, and Mark Gelinas. All of their books live on at Eckhartz Press.

 Protecting Children

=This week in 2018 (August 3), Eckhartz Press released retired Judge Michael Ian Bender's book Protecting Children. It  provides unique insight into aiding children of divorce, custody, and parentage disputes so that they grow into healthy adults.

Selling Dead People's Things

=Duane Scott Cerny owns one of Chicago's funkiest antique stores, and it inspired him to write the highly acclaimed Selling Dead People's Things. The book came out this week in 2017 (August 2). You can get a good feel for Duane's larger-than-life personality in this podcast interview. The man's an absolute stitch.

Best Seat in the House

=This week in 2014, Bruce Bohrer had a book signing in one of the most obvious places imaginable, Murphy's Bleachers. Several of his old Cub-usher colleagues showed up to say hello. So did at least one former Cub, Rick Sutcliffe.

Always a Pleasure

=One of the people featured in Chuck Swirsky's book Always a Pleasure is celebrating a birthday this week (July 28). Former Bulls coach and long-time basketball announcer Doug Collins is a Swirsky friend and confidant. Another famous basketballer is former Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. It's his birthday this week too (July 31)

Your Dime My Dance Floor

=Two of the people Chet Coppock wrote about in Your Dime My Dance Floor have birthdays this week. Neither of them were really sports people, although the late Irv Kupcinet (July 31) did do color commentary on Chicago Bears games (with Jack Brickhouse) for many years. Would you believe that Chet also knew Arnold Schwarzenegger (July 30).

Nose Over Toes & I C U Copper

=This week in 2019, two Eckhartz Press authors, Deb Tokarz and Janet Sutherland, appeared on the same radio show, Playtime with Bill Turck...

Wicker Park Wishes

=This week in 2021, Chicago media writer Robert Feder wrote about Eckhartz Press author Margaret Larkin in his Daily Herald column. Here is what he wrote...

Margaret Larkin, production assistant at Audacy all-news WBBM 780-AM/WCFS 105.9-FM, instructor at Columbia College and host of the long-running “Radiogirl Podcast,” can now add author to her credits. Chicago-based Eckhartz Press has published Wicker Park Wishes, Larkin’s debut novel. (Here is the link to order.) The story is set in 1994 in Chicago’s Wicker Park and Lincoln Park neighborhoods and downtown. Larkin will highlight the book at the 36th annual Printers Row Lit Fest September 11.

Transatlantic Passage

=This week in 2021, Paul M. Banks was making the rounds promoting his soccer book Transatlantic Passage. One of the stops was the Sports Beezer show (July 28). The following day (July 29) he appeared on WGN-TV News with Larry Hawley.

Chili Dog MVP

=This week in 2022 (July 28), Dr. David Fletcher, the co-author of Chili Dog MVP gave a well-attended chat at Cantigny in Wheaton. It was a fun celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 1972 White Sox.

=Two of the 1972 White Sox are celebrating birthdays this week, Pat Kelly (July 30) and Tony Muser (August 1). Both are featured in Chili Dog MVP

Inside Melania

=This week in 2020 (July 29), Eckhartz Press author Lauren LoGiudice debuted as a podcast host on the Radio Misfits Podcast Network. Her show is called Reconcile the Aisle. She later did a show with Eckhartz Press publishers Rick Kaempfer and David Stern.

Cubsessions & We Have Company

=What on earth could tie these two books together? The answer is Steve Trout. The former Cubs pitcher appeared in the book Cubsessions, and We Have Company author Bobby Skafish came out to that massive book launch party. Here's a photo to prove it...

=Trout is celebrating a birthday this week (July 30). Three of the rock stars Bobby features in his book are also celebrating birthdays this week, Rat Scabies (July 30), Robert Cray (August 1), and Jim Capaldi (August 2)

Publishing Portal--July 2, 2024

The latest news from Eckhartz Press, and a chance to peek into some of the great previous offerings from our humble little publishing company.

Happy Birthday!

=Will Wagner celebrated a birthday this past weekend (June 28). Will wrote the wonderful novel imagining what happened to Pete Townsend's guitar after he tossed it into the crowd at Woodstock.

=Former Eckhartz Press author Mark Taylor is celebrating a birthday this week (July 4). Mark wrote the book Hospital Heal Thyself. How good was his book? An international publisher swooped in and bought the rights to it. Congrats again to Mark. He's killing it.

Last Comiskey

=Thanks to everyone who came out to Blue Island Brewing Company this past weekend to meet Last Comiskey author Ken Smoller. The owner of the joint, Alan Cromwell, is always a great host to our authors. Thanks Alan!

Surviving Sue

=Mark your calendars, Vicki Atkinson has an event July 30th in Woodstock.

Everything I Know I learned from Rock Stars

=This week in 2017, Bill Paige was making the rounds because his book Everything I Know I Learned from Rock Stars was released (July 1). Needless to say, Bill was thrilled. Here's a photo of the day he got the first copy of the book...

=July 1 is also the birthday of Bill's cover-girl, Debbie Harry.

=Bill was in town for the book release, and took advantage, by returning an album he had taken out of the Arlington Heights library a measly 30 years earlier. It caught the attention of the Daily Herald

ICU Copper

=This week in 2019 (July 1) was also the release of Deb Tokarz's book I Cu Copper. What is that book about? Here's a Q&A with Deb.  You have to admit, it's one of our coolest covers ever.

Chug-A-Chug

=This week in 2013 (July 2), Eckhartz Press released our first children's book. It was written by Scott Redman, a sing-along story he created for his kid. The book includes a series of original photos by photographer Ray Nilsen.

Safe Inside

=This week in 2017, Lee Kingsmill got the very first copy of his book Safe Inside. It would be a few more weeks before the book's official release, but Lee was very excited...

The Unplanned Life

=Eckhartz Press author Roger Badesch will be performing on stage soon. Mark your calendars. He notes: It’s been a ‘Covid-minute’ since I had the honor and pleasure of joining my fellow SAG-AFTRA Chicago Radio Players in a live performance of classic old-time-radio (OTR) programs. So I’m happy to announce that we’re on stage again at the Chicago Cultural Center (old main Chicago library) downtown July 14th at 1:30pm. Two shows FREE - Call Northside 777 (I’m the narrator) and My Favorite Husband. Make plans now!

Best Seat in the House

=This week in 2014 (July 1), Bruce Bohrer was making the rounds promoting his Diary of a Wrigley Field Usher. One of the stops was WGN Radio. He appeared on Bob Sirott & Marianne Murciano's show...

=Two years later (6/30/16), when the Cubs were actually good, Daily Herald columnist Burt Constable sought out Bruce again to see if he had any regrets about leaving the job before the team hit it big.

Behind the Glass

Three of the sports titans featured in Randy Merkin's book are celebrating birthdays this week. The late George Steinbrenner was born on July 4. The story of booking him as a radio guest is one of the best stories in Randy's book. Former slugger Jose Canseco is another birthday boy this week (July 2), and so is one of the greatest boxers of all-time, Mike Tyson (June 30)

Records Truly Is My Middle Name

=Two people featured in John Landecker's book are celebrating birthdays this week. Sly Stallone (July 6)  turned John's interview with him into national publicity. Check out Rick's blog from Thursday if you want to read it. July 1 is also Dan Ackroyd's birthday. Danny and John Belushi stopped by the WLS studios to visit Landecker while they were filming The Blues Brothers.

Chili Dog MVP

=Goose Gossage wrote the foreword to Chili-Dog MVP, and the Hall of Famer is celebrating a birthday this week (July 5). Author David Fletcher explained how he managed to convince Goose to write that in this podcast interview.  Since Chili Dog MVP is about the 1972 White Sox, we would be remiss if we didn't also mention two other key players in the book. Chuck Tanner (July 4)  was the manager of that team, and Dave Lemonds.(July 5)

=Of course, Tanner also played for the Cubs during his playing days, which means he is in the Eckhartz Press book EveryCubEver as well.

Close Encounters of a Chicago Kind

=On July 1, 1863, the First National Bank of Chicago opened. Seems like the perfect day to remind you about Vicki Quade's great book about her personal encounters with Chicagoans. She spends an entire chapter telling stories about her encounters in banks. Very funny stuff.

Always a Pleasure

=One of the great basketball announcers is the former basketball superstar Clark Kellogg. Chuck Swirsky is in that same broadcast fraternity, and features this photograph of the two men in his book Always a Pleasure. Clark's birthday is July 1.

Transatlantic Passage

=Paul Banks wrote a book about soccer in America and how our players are becoming popular worldwide. That's especially true of our women. Birthday girl Alex Morgan (July 2) is at the top of that list. This photo is from Paul's book...

The Loop Files

=One of the most beloved people who ever worked at the Loop (WLUP Radio) was promotions director Sandy Stahl. This week in 2008 (July 3) she died unexpectedly at the much too young age of 58. When Rick Kaempfer wrote The Loop Files about the history of that radio station, he dedicated the book to Sandy. Here is a photo of her from the book...

=The July issue of Illinois Entertainer is out and includes Rick's interview with Tom Hoyt. Next week is the 45th anniversary of Disco Demolition and Tom was in charge of the radio station (The Loop) that created the most famous radio promotion of all time. His perspective is a little different than the many others Rick has spoken to about that day.

We Have Company

=The great Robbie Robertson was born this week (July 5) in 1943. Robbie passed away in 2023, but will live on forever in the pages of Bobby Skafish's rock and roll interview book We Have Company.

Ike & Me

=Rich King's latest book is about the great working relationship he had with his cameraman Ike. The Black and White team made it work for more than 20 years. But when Rich got invited to the White House as part of the Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup celebration, it was another distinguished Chicago journalist who was there with him. His colleague from Channel 7 in Chicago, Jim Rose. Rose is celebrating a birthday this week (July 5)

Down at the Golden Coin

=The second book ever released by Eckhartz Press was Kim Strickland's Down at the Golden Coin. Windy City Live's  Paige Wiser was one of the novel's biggest fans. (Her birthday is this week too--July 6). Here is what she said about Kim's book...

  • “Down at the Golden Coin” couldn’t be more timely or original, with the most eccentric spiritual guide since Clarence the Angel. Prepare to set your set your brain to spin-cycle.
