Publishing Portal--September 21, 2026

The latest news from Eckhartz Press, and a chance to peek into some of the great previous offerings from our humble little publishing company.

We have two brand new hits on our hands...

40 Years, 40 Horror Films

=Nick was selling them at the Drive In in Dixon this past weekend (below), and has another event coming up in a few weeks (see a few items below).

Maria the Pappas

=This book is already flying off the shelves. Currently it's a #1 new release in its category on Amazon. This afternoon at 3:30pm Maria Pappas will be on the air on WCPT (820 AM) with host Joan Esposito. Be sure to tune in! Maria is always an unpredictable (and entertaining) interview.

=Co-author Mark Eleveld chatted with Rick Kogan about the book on his podcast.

=This Friday (September 25) at 7:30pm, Maria will be at Pella Restaurant in Burr Ridge (720 Village Center Drive) signing and selling her book.

Celtic Knot

=If we could clone Robert Conlon, we would. The man is a sales machine. Of course, it helps when his book is so good. He has another event this week at the Book Loft in Oak Park (Wednesday, September 23, 6pm, 1047 Lake Street). Come on out and meet Bob. He spins a good yarn.

Inside Melania

If you happen to be in Brooklyn this week, you've got a chance to see our very own Lauren LoGuidice performing her stand up comedy routine at the Brooklyn Comedy Collective (167 Graham Ave.). Doors open at 6:30. The show starts at 7:00. Get your tickets here.

Nose Over Toes

=Janet Sutherland's Eckhartz Press book is about her comeback from a Brain Aneurysm. Janet is a big supporter of the annual fundraiser for the Brain Aneurysm foundation, and naturally she will be there this Sunday, September 27, at McCormick Place. The registration is at 8am, and the walk is 9:15am. You can pre-register here: The 2026 Brain Aneurysm Run/Walk

The Unplanned Life

=Come out and see Eckhartz Press author Roger Badesch this weekend. He will part of the SAG-AFTRA Radio Players presentation of The Tell-Tale Heart (as the policeman) at Chief O'Neil's on September 27 at 4pm. Tickets are free, but registration is required. You can register here.

40 Years, 40 Horror Films

=To say that Nick Digilio is a little excited about this upcoming event is an obvious understatement. Naturally he'll be selling his new book there. It couldn't possibly be more thematically appropriate.

=And here's another big deal for Nick. On Saturday October 10 (at noon), he will doing a book signing/meet & greet/interview at the Museum of Broadcast Communications. Rich Koz (Svengoolie) will be interviewing Nick.

In case you missed it...

Chili Dog MVP

=Chili Dog MVP was a big hit in Boston this past weekend!

=And thanks to Dr. Fletcher for these kind words...
David Fletcher

by author

Rick Kaempfer and David Stern, thanks for your tremendous support in believing in our book project, Chili Dog MVP, Dick Allen, The 1972 White Sox and A Transforming Chicago that John Owens and I wrote in 2021/2022. We were fortunate to have Sharon Pannozzo as our publicist to help launch the book. Thanks to Rick and David we were runner-up for Best Non-Fiction book for the Chicago Writers Association awards in 2022. The book evolved into My Father, Dick Allen , and my Emmy Award-winning director, Andy Billman, and I have gone all over the US previewing the film, including yesterday at the Boston Film Festival. We appreciate @Eckhartz Press for supporting us over the past four years.

The Sun at the End of the Road

=Great article by Rick Kogan in the Chicago Tribune last Wednesday about Tony Fitzpatrick's family--especially his kids Max and Gabby--and their new film. We just love the picture that accompanies the piece too, which also features Tony's wife Michelle and the spirit of Tony.

Ken Korber

=The man behind our best-selling children's books has a piece in the latest issue of Newsweek Magazine. It's called Children Should Learn Lifesaving Skills Early.

Sarasota

=Richard Reeder has a new website for his book Sarasota. Check it out here.

The Best of Words on Birds

=Jeff Reiter appeared at the Elgin Garden Club last week and sent us this note...

My presentation was called "The Nature of Birding." When it was over one of the younger members presented me with the attached poster.  She was clearly paying close attention to my words on birds! Plus she is a good artist.  Her name is Rachel Balk.

Mob Adjacent

=This book has also been made into a film. Have you seen the trailer?

Eckhartz Press birthdays!

South Side Memories

=Happy birthday to Eckhartz Press author Gloria Golec (September 22). This photo of Gloria and her grandchildren was taken just last weekend at the Printers Row Litfest...

An Off-White Christmas

=Eckhartz Press author, and founder of the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame, Donald G. Evans is also celebrating a birthday this week (September 25). Don wrote a great book of short stories for us called An Off-White Christmas. Stories about Christmas time, but not necessarily about the holiday itself. It's a perfect gift. Here's a podcast interview of Don talking about the book.

=Fellow author (also celebrating a birthday this week--September 24) Christine Sneed is a big fan of Don's book. Here's what she had to say about it...

  • The stories in Don Evans’s excellent collection, An Off-White Christmas, are full of witty, humane moments, vivid characters and settings that range from Chicago to Syracuse to Las Vegas. The people you’ll meet here are your friends, your neighbors, your relatives—in all their flawed beauty and pathos. This book is not to be missed.

—Christine Sneed, author of Little Known Facts and Portraits of a Few of the People I've Made Cry

Other Notable birthdays...

=This week is Debbie Boone's birthday (September 22). Co-author Larry Rosenbaum still says that Debbie's appearance at a Flip Side records store was one of the biggest draws they ever had. He tells that story in the pages of The Flip Side.

Truffle Hunt

=This week is also Bruce Springsteen's birthday (September 23). Eckhartz Press author Brent Petersen, a bit of Boss-o-phile, met Mr. Springsteen a few years ago and had his picture taken with him. No big whoop.

Grun Weiss Vor!

=This book is about the history of an esteemed local Chicago soccer club, Green White. Reading that history is like reading the history of soccer in Chicago. Among the biggest soccer stars to ever set foot in Chicago is former Chicago Sting star Arno Steffenhagen (right). His birthday is this week (September 24). Naturally Arno is also in Grun Weiss Vor! This is a photo of him with former Green White player Ralph Mansfield (left).

Records Truly Is My Middle Name

=Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, is celebrating a birthday this week (September 25). John Landecker tells a great story in Records Truly Is My Middle Name about Hamill's appearance on his show in 1977. It involved a bit John called "Radio Star Wars". We looked for the audio from that bit, and found it was recorded off-the-air by a radio listener that day. He explains the story quite well, but that's not the reason we're posting it. You can hear the bit itself here. It begins around the 2 minute mark of this video...

Scottie Pippen

=Scottie Pippen's birthday is this week too (September 25). The Bulls Hall of Famer appears in two Eckhartz Press books, Always a Pleasure by Chuck Swirsky, and Behind the Glass by Randy Merkin. (Photographic evidence below.)

The Sun at the End of the Road

=Marc Hauser was a famous photographer, and a friend of author Tony Fitzpatrick. Marc was born this week in history (September 25, 1952). Tony wrote a piece about him in The Sun at the End of the Road. Here is a small excerpt...

People compare him to WeeGee or Ralph Eugene Meatyard—fine photographers, to be sure, and great artists, but I find Marc's vision more shot-through with kindness and compassion. Many photographers look through a lens like they’re viewing a line-up of suspects—detached, removed, as if offering any element of their own feeling somehow invalidates the work itself. WeeGee often shot crime scenes, inviting a leering, voyeuristic glimpse into the tragedy of one’s fellow man or woman. Diane Arbus' photographs evoke something similar, and I always get the feeling she was ’slumming.’ Not so with Hauser. These were the kids from his neighborhood; kids he saw every day. His neighborhood and mine—Bucktown, in the early ‘80s, was a much rougher place than it is now, and those kids were a feral bunch. Many of them came to a bad end; drugs, crime and addiction took a lot of them. But, for that one Halloween? Marc forever preserved them in the amber of childhood, a place of near-innocence and joy. I am careful not to copy the kids from Marc's amazing book. His documentation of Chicago childhood is a work of art unto itself and should not be pantomimed.

=This is the artwork by Tony that accompanied the piece...

Notable Anniversaries...

The Sun at the End of the Road

=This week last year (September 26, 2025), actor Richard Kind called out Tony Fitzpatrick while singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" at Wrigley Field. Tony was incredibly touched by the gesture. He was in the hospital at the time, and only had a few more days to live. Tony did something that he had never done before. He put on a Cubs hat. (Tony was a die-hard Sox fan). It was the last picture Tony ever posted on his Instagram page.

I Bear Witness

=One of the enduring elements of Dan McNeil's excellent Bears book I Bear Witness is the chapter about the Bears legends who have passed away in recent years. Dan does a wonderful job eulogizing them, including one of the all-time greats who passed away this week (September 23) in 2020, Gale Sayers.

The Scar Dance

=This week in 2018 (September 27) the Eckhartz Press book The Scar Dance was released. It was named a finalist for Book of the Year by the Chicago Writers Association. This is a Q&A with author William Mansfield around the time of the book's release.

Your Dime My Dance Floor

=This week in 2018, Chet Coppock made an appearance at Blue Island Beer Company to promote his book Your Dime My Dance Floor. Chet held court during a Bears game and offered his commentary. The crowd loved it.

A Man, A Mission, A Miracle

=This week in 2018 (September 28), Lewis University named their student center after Brother James Gaffney. Gaffney, of course, is the subject of Andrew Langert's Eckhartz Press book.

1001 Train Rides in Chicago

=This week in 2018 (September 24), Richard Reeder signed copies of his book at the legendary north suburban deli Max & Benny's.

Everything I Know I Learned from Rock Stars

=This week in 2017 (September 25), Bill Paige received this wonderful review by Michael Doherty about his book Everything I Know I Learned from Rock Stars.

As you might guess, as a result of reading this book, the list of albums I want to purchase has grown...This book is an enjoyable and fairly quick read, and it’s set up such that you can, if you so choose, pick certain sections to read and bounce around as your interests dictate. There are several pages of photos in the middle of the book, including one of a letter written by Kurt Vonnegut, one of my two favorite writers (the other being Shakespeare).

--Famed Music Blogger Michael Doherty

=Here's the letter from Kurt Vonnegut...(click to enlarge it)

Doin the Cruise

=This week in 2017 (September 26), the music writer for the NWI Times, Tom Lounges, reviewed Mitch Michael's book Doin the Cruise. Here's a little taste of what he said...

Michaels is old-school and defines the term "radio personality" as he tells stories and becomes your surrogate friend on the other side of the dial, the voice you turn to when you need company and want to share a memory or two. Michaels does more than say — "That was ..." and "This is ..."

"I live the music. I tell listeners about the bands, the ins and outs of the music, share a story about the song or something about a concert by that artist I attended years ago. I don’t just talk at my listeners, I talk to them," Michaels said. "I hang out with them and rock right along with everyone who’s listening, because what it all comes down to really is we're all the same. We’re all just fans."

=And that was before Mitch was inducted into the Illinois Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Now he has the hardware.

We Have Company

=This week in 2016 (September 26), Bobby Skafish released his book of rock and roll interviews, We Have Company. Among his first stops on the publicity tour, WGN-TV.

The Flip Side

=This week in 1979 (September 22), Kiss performed at the International Amphitheater in Chicago. Naturally, the Rosenbaum brothers were the promoters of this incredible concert, and their kids were all there too. Want some photographic proof? You'll find it in the pages of The Flip Side. It's also here...

Back in the DDR

=One of the events that takes place in the novel Back in the DDR happened this week, September 23, 1976. It was a Crosby & Nash concert in Eppelheim, Germany. A real concert attended by the lead character in the book, Rudi.

The Balding Handbook

=The Balding Handbook helped balding men through the five stages of grieving for their hair loss. Because this week is also the anniversary of The Brady Bunch debut (September 26, 1969), it seems like a good week to feature this photo of author David Stern from the Denial stage of the book. Sadly, the book is no longer in print. Blame Rogaine.

Publishing Portal--May 26, 2025

The latest news from Eckhartz Press, and a chance to peek into some of the great previous offerings from our humble little publishing company.

Slivers

=BOOK LAUNCH PARTY THIS WEEK!

=Vicki Atkinson is gathering people to the Barrington White House (145 W. Main Street, Barrington) this Thursday night May 28 from 6:30-8pm for the official unveiling of her debut novel Slivers. What is Slivers about? Well, according to the back cover of the book...

In a single week in the summer of 1973, a quiet suburban neighborhood implodes when generations of mystical deceit become too much to bear. Drawn to the web of secrets and lies, the other worldly slivers refuse to be ignored, pushing one family to the brink.

=Vicki will do a reading, a meet-and-greet, and sign and sell copies of the book. Come on out if you can!

Beyond the Glass

=An informative Q&A with Randy Merkin about his new book. 5 questions, 5 answers.

=If you're interested in interviewing Randy about some of these great stories, Eckhartz Press publisher Rick Kaempfer (Rick@eckhartzpress.com) can help set that up.

COMING SOON!

=Another brand new Eckhartz Press book...

=What will it be about?

Recovery is not a destination — it's a transformation. This book is your compass for navigating the 12 Steps, empowering you to rise above your past and step into the life you were always meant to live. With warmth, wisdom, and a touch of humor, each page brings you closer to the full recovery that is already in your reach. Woven within the guidance are true stories from the fellowship of AA — deeply personal, beautifully human, and proof that no matter how far you've fallen, a new life is possible. You don't have to walk this road alone. The path forward starts here.

Chili Dog MVP

=OK, apparently this is a big-ticket item. I'm told hundreds of tickets have already been reserved for this debut...

=One of the great things about this entire Dick Allen project is that so little has been written and filmed about Dick Allen since his retirement. Every new item we get from his glory days is a potential treasure trove. For instance, the team putting the film together has been on the hunt for video of Dick's TV show on Channel 44 back in the day. We ran into sportscaster Fred Huebner at one of our book signings and found out that his father (also Fred Huebner) was the executive producer of Dick's show. The family didn't have video, but they did have a few still shots from the show. They were kind enough to share them. Here they are...

=By the way, if you don't already have Chili Dog MVP or Last Comiskey, we will be selling them at the big Chicago film premiere of My Father, Dick Allen. The authors will be there to sign them too.

=Paul Zimbrakos is the co-author of Sirens in the Loop. Zimbrakos was the legendary editor of the City News Bureau of Chicago who mentored generations of young journalists. Paul demonstrated a keen editorial vision, guiding the newsroom with integrity and a deep respect for factual reporting and timeliness. Unfortunately, he didn't live to see the book completed. Paul passed away this week (May 31) in 2022.

=Luckily Paul's daughter (shown below with co-author Jim Elsener who completed the book) and his grandchildren did live to see it. They were incredibly thankful and proud the day of the book launch party.

=Another big Sirens in the Loop party is coming this summer. It's a double event. Mark Wukas (The Kiss of Night) and Jim Elsener (Sirens in the Loop) are co-hosting a "City News Book Gala" on Saturday, July 11 from 5-7 pm at the Edgewater Historical Society Museum - 5358 N. Ashland, Chicago.  They will both have an opportunity to talk about (and sell) their City News books.

The Kiss of Night

=Speaking of The Kiss of Night, the WBEZ (NPR) radio show Here and Now did a phone-in segment about good summer reading books. Well, lucky for us, a reader and fan of Mark Wukas's The Kiss of Night called the show and gushed about his great novel. Thanks to that fan, and to WBEZ!

=It shouldn't have come as a surprise. The Kiss of Night is still receiving enthusiastic 5-star reviews on Amazon. Here's an example...

As a Chicago City News Bureau veteran with a command of the classics, Wukas elevates the crime novel genre with graceful prose as his street reporter protagonist leads us through twists and turns in the city's less travelled, but always fascinating, precincts. The resolution at the end of his tale cleverly ties up all the loose ends in an unexpectedly high-minded way

The Best of Words on Birds

=Thank you so much to everyone who came out to see Jeff Reiter at the Wheaton Public Library last week. It was a great turnout (about a hundred people).

=For those of you Words on Birds fans out there, be sure to check out the spring issue of Illinois Audubon. Jeff has contributed an article called "Rare Birders" to the magazine. It's a highly recommended read (unfortunately currently not on-line).

=How about a bird picture? Can you identify this one?*

Celtic Knot

=Here's another event coming soon. On August 7th, Robert Conlon is doing an Author Presentation at Embassy Public House on Taylor St. during the Chicago Irish Society groups night. Wait a minute. Conlon is Irish?

40 Years, 40 Films

=If you are putting your calendar together for June, here's another date to add. Nick's Pix comes back to the Lake Theater in Oak Park on Wednesday, June 10th at 7pm. Nick Digilio will be screening one of the great film musicals: South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut from 1999. It's a big screen viewing followed by discussion, trivia, and prizes. Oh, and of course, your chance to buy Nick's great book 40 Years, 40 Films.

Records Truly Is My Middle Name & Everything I Know I Learned from Rock Stars

=Steve Nicks celebrates a birthday this week (May 26), and she is featured in two Eckhartz Press books. Records Truly is My Middle Name author John Landecker hung out with her one night at the Playboy Mansion on State Parkway in Chicago (photo below), and Bill Paige interviewed her for Illinois Entertainer, which is featured in his book of interviews, Everything I Know I Learned from Rock Stars.

=In addition, Happy birthday to Karla Devito (May 29). An interview with her is also featured in  Everything I Know I Learned from Rock Stars.

=Completing the rock star trifecta, last week Joe Jackson was back in Chicago at the Park West Theater. Joe is featured in Bill Paige's book as well. (Photo from Tuesday/Rick Kaempfer)

The Flip Side

=This week last year the Vanished Chicagoland podcast featured an episode about The Flip Side record stores. Host Pete Kastanes has passed away, but his words live on. You can listen to it here.

Cubsessions

=A few key Cubsessions birthdays this week. Cubs announcer Pat Hughes (May 27) rates an entire chapter in the book with his account of what it was like to announce the World Series winning moment. In addition, two Cubs greats made appearances at Cubsessions book signings, Carlos Zambrano (June 1) and Randy Hundley (June 1). Both are shown in photos with Cubsessions co-author Randy Richardson below.

=Hundley also appeared on the podcast by Eckhartz Press publishers Rick and Dave. You can listen to that here.

I Bear Witness & Behind the Glass

=Dan McNeil's book I Bear Witness features a few interviews with Chicago Bears Hall of Famer Brian Urlacher. Brian is celebrating a birthday this week (May 25)

=Randy Merkin's first book (Behind the Glass) also features an entire chapter about former Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher. Those are Randy's kids with the Bears great.

=When Joel Daly passed away in 2020, WGN Radio posted a few of the interviews he did on their airwaves over the years. One of them was with Steve & Johnnie from this week in 2005 (May 26). You can still listen to it here.

The Unplanned Life

=This week in 2020, Roger Badesch was making the rounds promoting his new memoir. Among his media stops, Matt Bubala's show on WGN Radio (May 26).

Life Behind the Camera

=Who wouldn't want this endorsement? It happened to Life Behind the Camera author Chuck Quinzio this week (May 27) in 2014. Yes, that is Sting.

We Have Company

=It's a big week for rock star birthdays for some reason, which means it's a big week for Bobby Skafish's book We Have Company. Three rock stars celebrating birthdays this week get the full chapter treatment in Bobby's book. Crowded House's Neil Finn (May 27), guitarist Gary Brooker (May 29), and Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood (June 1). That's Ronnie on the left, and Skafish in the middle of the photo. Bernard Fowler is on the right.

Your Dime My Dance Floor

=Chet Coppock attended every Chicago Bears opening day game for 68 years in a row. Naturally he became acquainted with the great Bears running back Gale Sayers. He writes a whole chapter about him in his book Your Dime My Dance Floor. Gale was born this week in 1943.

Always a Pleasure

=Bill Walton passed away this week (May 27) in 2024. He and Chuck Swirsky knew each other well in the basketball world, and Bill made an appearance in Always a Pleasure.

=Former Chicago Bulls coach Billy Donovan obviously dealt with Chicago Bulls radio play-by-play man Chuck Swirsky on a regular basis. It wasn't a big surprise that Billy also appeared in Chuck's book Always a Pleasure. It's Billy's birthday this week (May 30)

=This week in 2018 (May 31), the Chicago Writers Association came to us and asked us to publish their literary journal. Little did we know this would just be the beginning. Since then they have asked us to publish four more! Volume 5 debuts in June.

EveryCubEver

=The seventh edition of EveryCubEver is still selling well.

=This week in 2021, Rick Kaempfer appeared on John Landecker's show on WGN Radio talking about the 3rd edition of his book EveryCubEver. He even recites a poem he wrote for the book. Worth a listen.  It's about Harry Steinfeldt, the forgotten third baseman in the famous Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance infield. You can read it below...

An Ode To Harry

The poem by Franklin P. Adams definitely enhanced,

The Hall of Fame chances of Tinker, Evers & Chance,

But the other name in that infield has been lost to time,

Just because Harry Steinfeldt’s name didn’t rhyme,

He hit for more power, he drove in more runs,

He made fewer errors, and when the game was to be won,

They leaned on Harry Steinfeldt, the World Series MVP,

Though his name was a mouthful, depriving immortality

Righteous Might

=This week in 2020, Keith Conrad's novel Righteous Might was released. The science fiction thriller about time travel and the attack on Pearl Harbor is still available at Eckhartz Press. In fact, exactly one year later the audio book of Righteous Might was released as well.

Wicker Park Wishes

=This week in 2021, Wicker Park Wishes author Margaret Larkin sat down for this Q&A about her recently released book.

Signature Shoes

=One of the pioneers in the world of Signature Shoes was New York Jets star quarterback Joe Namath, who is celebrating a birthday this week (May 31). He is featured prominently in Ryan Trembath's book about the celebrity shoe craze.

Monkey in the Middle

=Dobie Maxwell's incredible book about a real-life bank robbery has gotten praise from across the spectrum. One of the biggest fans is Toronto radio personality Jerry Agar (May 31 birthday boy). Here's what he said about the book...

  • “It is a sad fact of the human condition that we are entertained by the misfortune of others. That is why Dobie Maxwell calls himself “Mr. Lucky.” He takes the body blows that life has dealt him and makes them into stories for your amusement. None is better than the story told here of two life-long friends – guys who counted on one another – gone wrong with bank robberies, the FBI, police lineups and all the intrigue of crime story fiction which became all too real for Maxwell. If your best friend’s actions had you in the crosshairs of the FBI, what would you do? Read the story, for Dobie’s answer.”

    Jerry Agar/Talk show host/News Talk 1010—CFRB Toronto

Truffle Hunt

=This week in 2015 (June 1), Brent Petersen made a recipe featured in his foodie novel Truffle Hunt at the farmer's market in Austin, Texas...
