John & Yoko 45 years

John & Yoko would have been celebrating their 45th anniversary today. From Bob Dearborn's The Olde Disc Jockey's Almanac...

March 20, 1969…After days of looking for a suitable, legal place, John Lennon married Yoko Ono in the British Consulate Office at the Rock of Gibraltar in Spain, a piece of land still owned by the English and described by Lennon as being necessarily "quiet, friendly, and British." Later, in the Beatles song "The Ballad Of John And Yoko," he described the site as "Gibraltar, near Spain," unintentionally adding fuel to the fire of an international controversy, as England and Spain were then at odds over the area's ownership.
