Princess Diana died 20 years ago today.
I was backstage at a Landecker & The Legends concert, waiting to go on stage, when I heard the news. Part of the show was a song about Diana, written in honor of her visit to Chicago in 1996 (to the tune of the Paul Anka song). We obviously opted not to do the song that night, and never did it again. At the time it felt like one of those "you'll never forget where you were" moments.
When Elton John released this version of his song for Diana it became (and remains) the best selling chart single all-time...
